Lambert Reynst
Lambert Reynst (1613–1679) was a Dutch regent and politician of the Golden Age. Born in Amsterdam, he belonged to the "republican" Dutch States Party. Family He came from the patrician Reynst family and was the son of Hendrick Reynst and his wife Elisabeth Prinsen. He was also a cousin of the Grand Pensionary Johan de Witt and brother in Law of Cornelis de Graeff and his brother Andries de Graeff, with whom he sat together in the Amsterdam Vroedschap during the Rampjaar 1672. Lambert himself married Alida, daughter of Cornelis Bicker and Aertge Witsen. Life Reynst worked as a lawyer and between 1649 and 1655 was a counsellor for the Dutch Admiralty in the Noorderkwartier. The family lived on Keizersgracht 71. In 1667 he became a 'bewindhebber' or governor of the Dutch East India Company and was made mayor of Amsterdam in 1667, 1668 and 1672. Aernout van Overbeke (15 December 1632 – 19 July 1674) was a Dutch writer and humorist. His works include burlesque letters detailing his travels and a collection of jokes. His ''Rym-wercken'' was very popular and was reprinted nine times after his death. Life He was born in Leiden, where his Antwerp-born parents had settled after marrying in Frankfurt and spending a period in Amsterdam. His family was quite wealthy, with a townhouse on the Rapenburg and a country residence in Alphen aan den Rijn and receiving illustrious guests such as Vossius and Barlaeus. However, Aernout's father later got into financial difficulties, which seem to have affected his health - he died in 1638. Van Overbeke entered Leiden University aged eleven and completed his legal studies there on 10 March 1655 with a disputation or thesis entitled ''De transactionibus''. Meindert Lubbertszoon Hobbema (bapt. 31 October 1638 – 7 December 1709) was a Dutch Golden Age painter of landscapes, specializing in views of woodland, although his most famous painting, ''The Avenue at Middelharnis'' (1689, National Gallery, London), shows a different type of scene. Hobbema was a pupil of Jacob van Ruisdael, the pre-eminent landscape painter of the Dutch Golden Age, and in his mature period produced paintings developing one aspect of his master's more varied output, specializing in "sunny forest scenes opened by roads and glistening ponds, fairly flat landscapes with scattered tree groups, and water mills", including over 30 of the last in paintings. Johannes Hudde
Johannes (van Waveren) Hudde (23 April 1628 – 15 April 1704) was a burgomaster (mayor) of Amsterdam between 1672 – 1703, a mathematician and governor of the Dutch East India Company. As a "burgemeester" of Amsterdam he ordered that the city canals should be flushed at high tide and that the polluted water of the town "secreten" should be diverted to pits outside the town instead of into the canals. He also promoted hygiene in and around the town's water supply. "Hudde's stones" were marker stones that were used to mark the summer high water level at several points in the city. Hans Bontemantel
Hans Bontemantel (24 January 1613 - 8 June 1688) was a Dutch merchant and for a long time a schepen of Amsterdam, where he was born. He also served as acting-schout in 1672, whilst he was 'president-schepen'. As a supporter of Johan de Witt's political system, he was one of the nine regenten dismissed on 10 September 1672 by stadthouder William III of Orange, at the same time as the dismissal of Lambert Reynst, Andries de Graeff and Pieter de Graeff.
