Cham (district)
Cham () is a Districts of Germany, ''Landkreis'' (district) in Bavaria, Germany. It is bounded by (from the south and clockwise) the districts of Regen (district), Regen, Straubing-Bogen, Regensburg (district), Regensburg and Schwandorf (district), Schwandorf and by the Czech Republic, Czech Plzeň Region. History The first historical date in the regional history is the year 748, when the bishop of Regensburg ordered the foundation of a monastery in the sparsely populated region. About 100 years later, the royal castle of Cham was built and became a summer residence for the Holy Roman Emperors. The region was called ''Campriche'' or ''Mark Cham''. In 1204, the Mark Cham became subject to Bavaria, in 1352 to the Electorate of the Palatinate and in the 17th century back to Bavaria. Lamer Winkel
The Lamer Winkel is a region in the northern Bavarian Forest between the mountains of Hoher Bogen, Osser, Arber and Kaitersberg; politically it belongs to the county of Cham in the Bavarian province of Upper Palatinate. Geography This formerly remote valley is one of the most scenic regions of the Bavarian Forest and, as a result, has been heavily developed in recent decades for tourism. In the Lamer Winkel are the municipalities of Lohberg, Lam and Arrach, which form a popular holiday region, especially for families. The valley is surrounded by the densely wooded ridges of the Hoher Bogen and the Kunisch Mountains in the north and by the crests of the Arber and Kaitersberg in the south. Gabriele Krone-Schmalz
Gabriele Krone-Schmalz (born 8 November 1949 in Lam, District of Cham, Bavaria) is a German broadcast journalist and author. Biography With an academic background in Eastern European history, political science, and Slavic studies, Krone-Schmalz holds a doctorate in history and political science. Since 1976, she has worked primarily for various radio and television broadcasts of the West German broadcasting company Westdeutscher Rundfunk. Krone-Schmalz worked at the Moscow studio of ARD broadcasting from 1987 to 1992. Between 1992 and 1997, she hosted the world culture programming of the ARD. Since then, she has been self-employed as a freelance journalist. Krone-Schmalz is also known for her involvement with the philanthropic work on behalf of orphans in Saint Petersburg. She is the author of several books on Russia. In 2008 she was awarded with the prestigious Pushkin Medal of the Russian Federation.
