Lalopua, American Samoa
Satala is one of Pago Pago’s constituent villages and is located in Pago Pago Bay on Tutuila Island. Satala is in Maoputasi County in the Eastern District of the island. It is home to the historic Satala Cemetery, which is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, and the government-owned Ronald Reagan Marina Railway Shipyard. It is also the location of the Satala Power Plant on the northwest coast of Pago Pago Harbor, which previously generated all of the power for Tutuila Island. It is located directly across the street from the coast. American Samoa Power Authority, which operates the ASPA Satala Power Plant, is a non-profit semi-autonomous government agency. The power plant itself is a 13,215 sq. ft. structure on Satala's shoreline. The American Samoa Power Authority (ASPA) is a government-run public utility company providing electricity, water, wasterwater, and waste disposal services within American Samoa. History Governor Peter T. Coleman issued an emergency executive order on October 1, 1981, which established the American Samoa Power Authority (ASPA). The 1970s and 1980s experienced frequent power outages. Supply failed to meet demand. Appeals to Washington, DC resulted in an appropriation of $1.5 million. Governor Coleman and Congressman Fofó Iosefa Fiti Sunia appealed to congressional committees for an emergency appropriation. In 1982, Congress approved $2 million out of the $8 requested. ASPA hired a new director, Jim Carrier, who urged the immediate purchase of two large diesel engines to solve the immediate problem. 2009 Tsunami
The 2009 Samoa earthquake and tsunami took place on 29 September 2009 in the southern Pacific Ocean adjacent to the Kermadec-Tonga subduction zone. The submarine earthquake occurred in an Extensional tectonics, extensional environment and had a moment magnitude scale, moment magnitude of 8.1 and a maximum Modified Mercalli intensity scale, Mercalli intensity of VI (''Strong''). It was the List of 21st-century earthquakes#2009, largest earthquake of 2009. The earthquake initiated with a normal-faulting event with a magnitude of 8.1. Within two minutes of the earthquake rupture, two large magnitude 7.8 earthquakes occurred on the subduction zone interface. Satala Power Plant
Located in Turkey, the settlement of Satala ( xcl, Սատաղ ''Satał'', grc, Σάταλα), according to the ancient geographers, was situated in a valley surrounded by mountains, a little north of the Euphrates, where the road from Trapezus to Samosata crossed the boundary of the Roman Empire, when it was a bishopric, which remains a Latin Catholic titular see. The clock time in this zone is based on the mean solar time of the 165th meridian west of the Greenwich Observatory. Satala Cemetery
The Satala Cemetery is located on the north side of Pago Pago Harbor on the island of Tutuila, the largest in American Samoa. The cemetery was established, apparently late in the 19th century, by the United States Navy, as an interment site for foreigners on the island. Traditional Samoan burial practice is to bury family members on their property, a method not available to outsiders. One section of the cemetery is dedicated to graves of Korean fishermen. The cemetery was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006. It was damaged by a tsunami that struck the island in 2009.
