Lall Jugnauth
Lall Jugnauth (15 November 1920 – 01 August 1970) was actively involved in pre-colonial and post-colonial Mauritian politics. Early life Lall Jugnauth was the cousin of Aneerood Jugnauth who subsequently became Prime Minister and President of Mauritius. Education and career Lall Jugnauth travelled abroad to study law. When he returned to Mauritius he joined the Civil Service and became a Magistrate before resigning to become actively involved in politics. Political career At the 21 October 1963 Legislative Council elections Lall Jugnauth was a candidate of Independent Forward Bloc (IFB) in Constituency No.18 Montagne Blanche (at the time when there were 40 Constituencies on the island) where he was defeated by rival Satcam Boolell of the Labour Party (Mauritius). Dev Virahsawmy
Dev Virahsawmy (born 1942 in Quartier-Militaire, Mauritius), is a politician, playwright, poet and advocate of the Mauritian Creole language. Though he writes easily in both French and English, Virahsawmy is most renowned for his efforts to popularize the use of Creole. Early life Virahsawmy spent his early childhood in Goodlands but after the death of his mother he went to live with his grandparents at Beau-Bassin. After having done his secondary education, he went to Scotland at the Edinburgh University to study languages, literature and linguistics. Dev's father Simadree was a minister of the Labour Party who later defected to rival party MTD. Former MMM minister Jayen Cuttaree was Dev Virahsawmy's brother-in-law. The Mouvement Militant Mauricien (MMM) ( en, Mauritian Militant Movement) is a left-wing socialist political party in Mauritius. The party was formed by a group of students in the late 1960s. The MMM advocates what it sees as a "fairer" society, without discrimination on the basis of social class, race, community, caste, religion, gender or sexual orientation. Sookdeo Bissoondoyal (25 December 1908 – 18 August 1977) was a Mauritian politician and one of the leading figures in the independence movement. Early life Sookdeo Bissoondoyal was born in Tyack in 1908. He had two brothers Basdeo and Soogrim. Education and career At the Young Men's Hindu Aided Primary School (Port Louis) he acquired his primary education. He passed his Teacher's Examination and worked as Primary School Teacher from 1923 to 1945. Political career In 1946, Sookdeo Bissoondoyal left the teaching profession to join his elder brother Basdeo's movement Jan Andolan. Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam (in traditional Hindi: Shivsagar Ram Gulam) (18 September 1900 – 15 December 1985; often referred to as ''Chacha Ramgoolam'' or ''SSR'') was a Mauritian physician, politician, and statesman.
