The qualifications for this list of Maine lakes is that the lake is located partially or entirely in Maine, named, and has a surface area of more than . This makes it legally a great pond unless it is dammed, smaller than prior to damming, smaller than afterwards, and entirely bounded by land owned by a single landowner. There are at least 2,677 lakes or ponds in Maine with no name (not including 2 whose name begins "Unnamed"), 222 of which would be on this list if named. There are also at least 1,022 named lakes too small to make this list. The lakes are organized by county, and from largest to smallest surface area in each county. Some lakes are located in or border multiple counties; in these cases they are listed in the single county assigned to them in the primary reference for this list. Maine
Maine () is a state in the New England and Northeastern regions of the United States. It borders New Hampshire to the west, the Gulf of Maine to the southeast, and the Canadian provinces of New Brunswick and Quebec to the northeast and northwest, respectively. Scopan Lake
Scopan Lake is a V-shaped lake in northern Maine. The lake was known as Squa Pan Lake by early European settlers, but was renamed in 2011 to eliminate what Native Americans in the United States interpreted as a racial slur. The lake is mostly in Scopan township (formerly Squapan township), but the north end of the eastern arm of the "V" extends into Maine township 11, range 4; and the north end of the western arm extends into Masardis and Ashland. The lake discharges to Scopan Stream (formerly Squa Pan Stream) through a dam in Masardis. Scopan Stream flows into the Aroostook River downstream of the dam, and the Aroostook River is a tributary to the Saint John River. The Bangor and Aroostook Railroad crosses the northern tip of both arms of the lake. Musquacook Stream is a tributary to the Allagash River in the North Maine Woods. The stream originates in a chain of lakes in Maine range 11 townships 10, 11 and 12. The flow sequence is from Clear Lake through Fifth Musquacook Lake into Fourth Musquacook Lake in Piscataquis County; and from Fourth Musquacook Lake through Third Musquacook Lake, Second Musquacook Lake, and First Musquacook Lake into the Allagash River Musquacook Deadwater in Aroostook County. Mud Lake (Fish River)
The Fish River chain of lakes is a series of five lakes in the North Maine Woods region of northern Maine, in a tributary stream to the Fish River. The lakes are an important northern Maine recreation area providing habitat for wildlife including rainbow smelt, brook trout, lake trout, and land-locked Atlantic salmon. Long Lake Long Lake extends southward from Saint Agatha into Maine township 17 ranges 3 and 4. Tributaries Brishlotte Brook, Ouellette Brook, and Little River flow into the north end of the lake. Big Twenty Township
The Big Twenty Township is an administrative division in Aroostook County in northern Maine. It is one of the largest townships in Maine, and contains Estcourt Station, a village of four people that is the northernmost point in Maine. The township also contains the northernmost point in New England. Geography The Big Twenty Township is made up of two separate survey townships, T20 R11 and T20 R12 WELS. It is bordered by Quebec, Canada to the north, east, and west, and by T19 R11 and T19 R12 WELS to the south. The borders of the township were settled on August 9, 1842, with the signing of the Webster–Ashburton Treaty.
