Lakeland Derby Dames
Lakeland Derby Dames was a flat-track roller derby league based in Lakeland, FL. The league was founded in March 2010. The leagues' travel team was the Rockabilly Rebels. They formally practiced and played in Hangar E on the Sun 'n Fun campus. The team competed against other teams from all over the state of Florida, both at their home venue and away. In 2013 they played Jacksonville RollerGirls, Ocala Cannibals, Gainesville Roller Rebels, South Florida Roller Girls, Sintral Florida Derby Demons, Revolution Roller Derby, North River Rolling Renegades, Thunder City Derby Sirens, Alachua County Rollers, and Deadly Rival Roller Derby. The team won 12 of their 18 games in the 2013 season. Their last game was played on October 25, 2015, against The Rolling Valkyries. The league has since been disbanded. Roller Derby
Roller derby is a roller skating contact sport played by two teams of fifteen members. Roller derby is played by approximately 1,250 amateur leagues worldwide, mostly in the United States. Game play consists of a series of short scrimmages (jams) in which both teams designate a jammer (who uniquely wears a star on the helmet) and four blockers to skate counter-clockwise around a track. The jammer scores points by lapping members of the opposing team. The teams attempt to hinder the opposing jammer while assisting their own jammer—in effect, playing both offense and defense simultaneously. Sun ’n Fun Aerospace Expo (officially styled SUN 'n FUN) is a nonprofit organization in Lakeland, Florida dedicated to the promotion of aviation education. It is best known for the annual week-long fly-in and airshow at Lakeland Linder International Airport in Lakeland, Florida, usually held during late March or early April. Previously called the Sun ’n Fun International Fly-In and Expo'', for 2020 the event was officially renamed the ''Sun ’n Fun Aerospace Expo'' in April 2019. In addition to the fly-in, at one time Sun 'n Fun also operated the Florida Air Museum and supported the Central Florida Aerospace Academy—an aviation-focused career academy operated by the Polk County School Board as part of Kathleen High School. Jacksonville Roller Derby is a women's flat track roller derby league based in Jacksonville, Florida, (USA). Originally formed as the First Coast Fatales, the league became Jacksonville RollerGirls in 2007, and changed to its current name in 2018. The league has been a member of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) since December 2010. Jacksonville hosted a WFTDA Division 1 Playoff tournament in 2015, at which they finished in 2nd place. Gainesville Roller Rebels (GRR) is a women's flat track roller derby league based in Gainesville, Florida. Founded in 2007, the league consists of a home team and an all star team which competes against teams from other leagues. Gainesville is a member of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA). History The league was founded in late 2007 by Catherine Seemann, known as "Ms. Rebel". She recruited skaters using a variety of methods, including flyering, posting on MySpace, and talking to friends. Deadly Rival Roller Derby (DRRD) is Florida's only Banked Track Roller Derby league, the only Banked Track league in the Southeastern United States and the 8th operating in the country as of 2019. When the league was first organized, Deadly Rival was the original roller derby league of Pinellas County, and throughout their history maintained the largest women’s roller derby league in the county. Founded in 2011 as Pinellas County Roller Girls, the league played four exhibition bouts the first year: the Roll-A-Hula Luau, the School Girl Massacre, the Rocky Roller Derby Show, and the Roller Derby Christmas Story.
