Lake Village Confederate Monument
The Lake Village Confederate Monument is located on the median of Lakeshore Drive, between Main and Jackson Streets in Lake Village, Arkansas. The marble monument depicts a Confederate Army soldier standing in mid stride with his left foot forward. His right hand holds the barrel of a rifle, whose butt rests on the monument base. He carries a bedroll draped over his left shoulder, and wears a Confederate cap. A cannon that served as a fountain was once part of the sculpture, but is now missing. The statue is about high and square; it rests on a marble foundation that is long, wide, and high. The monument was erected in 1910 by two chapters of the United Daughters of the Confederacy at a cost of about $3,000. The base has inscriptions on its east and west faces. Lake Village, Arkansas
Lake Village is a city in and the county seat of Chicot County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 2,575 at the 2010 census. It is located in the Arkansas Delta. Lake Village is named for its location on Lake Chicot, an oxbow lake formed by the Mississippi River. History According to legend, the remains of Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto might be buried under Lake Chicot. His expedition visited ''Guachoya'', a native village along the edge of the lake, which is recorded as the site of his death (list of sites and peoples visited by the Hernando de Soto Expedition). Lake Village was later founded at this location by European-American colonists. The area was developed for cotton plantations, and the county seat was the center of government and county trading. United Daughters Of The Confederacy
The United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) is an American neo-Confederate hereditary association for female descendants of Confederate Civil War soldiers engaging in the commemoration of these ancestors, the funding of monuments to them, and the promotion of the pseudohistorical Lost Cause ideology and corresponding white supremacy. Established in Nashville, Tennessee in 1894, the group venerated the Ku Klux Klan during the first half of the 20th century and funded the construction of a monument to the Klan in 1926. According to the Institute for Southern Studies, the UDC "elevated he Klanto a nearly mythical status. It dealt in and preserved Klan artifacts and symbology.
