It is a cemetery property that includes wooded and open acres included in the cemetery's historic landscape plan and developed in two phases between about 1855 and 1906. Penn Yan, New York
Penn Yan is an incorporated village and the county seat of Yates County, New York, United States. The population was 5,159 at the 2010 census. It lies at the north end of the east branch of Keuka Lake, one of the Finger Lakes. Penn Yan, New York is home to one of the oldest mills in the United States, The Birkett Mills, founded in 1797. The Village of Penn Yan is primarily in the Town of Milo, but a small section is in the Town of Benton. A smaller section is in the Town of Jerusalem. The Penn Yan Airport is south of the village. Joshua Lee (1783 – December 29, 1842) was an American physician and War of 1812 veteran who served one term as a United States representative from New York from 1835 to 1837. Biography Born in Hudson in 1783, he studied medicine and was licensed to practice in 1804. War of 1812 He was commissioned in 1811 by Gov. Daniel D. Tompkins as surgeon of Colonel Avery Smith's regiment of Infantry and served in that capacity during the War of 1812. Political career He was supervisor of the town of Benton in 1815 and was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1817 and again in 1833. Hanford Struble (May 14, 1842 – October 25, 1903) was an American lawyer, politician, and judge from New York. Early life and education Struble was born on May 14, 1842, in Milo, New York, the son of Levi Struble and Mary Misner. He grew up on a farm. Struble attended the Starkey Seminary from 1853 to 1857, followed by Genesee College, where he graduated with honors in 1861. From 1861 to 1862, he worked as principal of Dundee Academy. Military service In July 1862, during the American Civil War, Struble enlisted in Company B of the 148th New York Infantry Regiment and was chosen as first lieutenant. A few months later, he was appointed to General Egbert Viele's staff with the rank of major and served as provost-marshal of Portsmouth, Virginia. Elijah Spencer (1775 in Columbia County, New York – December 15, 1852 in Benton, Yates County, New York) was an American politician from New York. Biography In 1791, he removed to Jerusalem, then in Ontario County, New York, settling in that part which was separated in 1803 as the Town of Vernon, later renamed the Town of Benton, and engaged in agricultural pursuits. He was Supervisor of the Town of Benton from 1810 to 1819. He was a member from Ontario County of the New York State Assembly in 1819. Spencer was elected as a Democratic-Republican to the 17th United States Congress, holding office from December 3, 1821, to March 3, 1823. Afterwards he resumed his agricultural pursuits. William Morrison Oliver (October 15, 1792 – July 21, 1863) was an American politician, attorney, and jurist who served as a United States Representative for the state of New York and acting Lieutenant Governor of New York. Early life and education Born in Londonderry, Rockingham County, New Hampshire, Oliver received limited schooling. Oliver and his identical twin brother, Andrew, were the sons of Andrew and Elizabeth Ormiston Oliver. John Morrison Oliver
John Morrison Oliver (September 6, 1828 – March 30, 1872) was a Union general during the American Civil War. He fought in many of the battles involving the Army of the Tennessee, occasionally commanding a brigade. Biography He was born on September 6, 1828 in Penn Yan, New York. Oliver graduated from St. John's College in New York. He moved to Michigan and worked as a pharmacist. When the Civil War began he joined the 4th Michigan Volunteer Infantry Regiment as a private. He rose to captain in that regiment before being appointed colonel of the 15th Michigan on March 13, 1862.Eicher p.409 He led his regiment at Shiloh and commanded the 2nd Brigade, 6th Division during the siege and battle of Corinth. Daniel Morris (January 4, 1812 – April 22, 1889) was a U.S. Representative from New York during the American Civil War. Biography Morris was born in Fayette, New York on January 4, 1812. He attended the public schools and the Canandaigua Academy in Ontario County, New York. Morris farmed and taught school before deciding on a legal career. Edward Johnston (February 8, 1844 – January 20, 1920) was an American soldier in the U.S. Army who served with the 5th U.S. Cavalry during the Indian Wars.
