Lake Trakošćan ( hr, Trakošćansko jezero) is an artificial lake located in Trakošćan, Hrvatsko Zagorje, Croatia. The lake measures about in length, and around in area. Its average depth is . The water reaches temperatures up to in summer. The lake freezes over for three months during the winter. At its inception, the lake functioned as a fish pond, but retained its architectural importance to the present day. Trakošćan Castle
Trakošćan Castle (pronounced , hr, Dvor Trakošćan or ''Dvorac Trakošćan'') is a castle located in northern Croatia (in Varaždin County) that dates back to the 13th century (although the first written mention of the toponym "Trakošćan" is dated to 1334). History Trakošćan was built in the 13th century within Croatia's northwestern fortification system, as a rather small observation fortress for monitoring the road from Ptuj to Bednja Valley. According to a legend, Trakošćan was named after another fortification (arx Thacorum) that was alleged to have stood in the same spot back in antiquity. Another source claims that it was named after the knights of Drachenstein who were in control of the region in early Middle Ages. The toponym was first mentioned in written records in 1334. Varaždin County ( hr, Varaždinska županija) is a county in Northern Croatia. It is named after its county seat, the city of Varaždin. Geography The county contains the city of Varaždin, the towns of: Ivanec, Ludbreg, Lepoglava, Novi Marof and Varaždinske Toplice, as well as 22 municipalities. It covers an area of and had a population of 175,951 in the 2011 census. Hrvatsko Zagorje (; Croatian Zagorje; ''zagorje'' is Croatian for "backland" or "behind the hills") is a cultural region in northern Croatia, traditionally separated from the country's capital Zagreb by the Medvednica Mountain. It comprises the whole area north of Mount Medvednica up to Slovenia in the north and west, and up to the regions of Međimurje and Podravina in the north and east. The population of Zagorje is not recorded as such, as it is administratively divided among Krapina-Zagorje County (total population 142,432), and western and central part of Varaždin County (total population 183,730).
