Lake Tenkiller
Tenkiller Ferry Lake, or more simply, "Lake Tenkiller," is a reservoir in eastern Oklahoma formed by the damming of the Illinois River (Oklahoma), Illinois River. The earth-fill dam was constructed between 1947 and 1952 by the United States Army Corps of Engineers for purposes of flood control, hydroelectricity, hydroelectric power generation, water supply and recreation. It went into full operation in 1953.Warner, Badger and Lage. The lake and dam were named for the Tenkiller family, prominent Cherokee, Cherokees who owned the land and ferry that were bought for the project. This is 6th largest lake in Oklahoma, based on water capacity. The following is a list of lakes in Oklahoma located entirely (or partially, as in the case of Lake Texoma) in the state. Oklahoma has more than 200 lakes created by dams. All lakes listed are man-made. Oklahoma's only natural lakes are oxbow and playa lakes. Oklahoma has sixty-two oxbow lakes at least 10 acres in size. The largest, near the Red River in McCurtain County is 272 acres. Playa lakes are found in saucer-shaped depressions in the high plains region. A riparian zone or riparian area is the interface between land and a river or stream. Riparian is also the proper nomenclature for one of the terrestrial biomes of the Earth. Tenkiller State Park
Tenkiller State Park is a Oklahoma state park located in northwestern Sequoyah County, Oklahoma, near the city of Vian, Oklahoma. Larger cities nearby include Sallisaw, Muskogee and Webbers Falls, Oklahoma. The park adjoins Lake Tenkiller, which is the sixth-largest reservoir in Oklahoma, based on normal water capacity.
