Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge
The Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge is New Zealand's largest mass participation cycling event. First held in 1977, it takes place on the last Saturday of each November and circumnavigates Lake Taupo, a volcanic crater lake in the centre of the North Island. The ride starts and finishes in Taupo with one full circuit being approximately 160 km. Around 7,000 riders take part each year. Categories The event aims to cater for all riders, from the elite racers to those just wishing to make it around. This is reflected in the range of finishing times - from under 4 to over 10 hours. Riders are asked to nominate finishing times and staggered starts are used to group riders by ability. Gordon McCauley
Gordon McCauley (born 9 March 1972) is a New Zealand cyclist. He has won the men's New Zealand road race championships a record five times and the New Zealand time trial championships a record three times. He was also the first New Zealander to break the 50 minute barrier for the 40 km time trial, recording a time of 49 minutes 50 seconds at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, winning the bronze medal. He is the only rider ever to hold New Zealand Road, Time Trial and Criterium Titles (although on different years). Aaron Gate
Aaron Gate (born 26 November 1990) is a New Zealand road and track cyclist, who currently rides for UCI Continental team . He represented his country in track cycling at the 2012, 2016 and 2020 Summer Olympics. Gate is the first New Zealand athlete to win four gold medals at a single Commonwealth Games. Career He won a bronze medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics in the team pursuit event with teammates Sam Bewley, Marc Ryan, Jesse Sergent and Westley Gough. On 24 February 2013 in Belarus, Gate won the world championship title in the omnium event. Racquel Sheath
Racquel Sheath (born 27 November 1994) is a retired New Zealand Track cycling, track and road cyclist. She represented her nation at the 2015 UCI Track Cycling World Championships. Sheath competed for the New Zealand team in the Cycling at the 2016 Summer Olympics – Women's team pursuit, women's team pursuit at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. There, she delivered the quartet of Lauren Ellis (cyclist), Lauren Ellis, Jaime Nielsen, and Rushlee Buchanan a New Zealand record of 4:17.592 to ensure the team's spot in the medal race, before narrowly losing the face-off to their Canadian rivals (4:18.459) for the bronze by a 3.8-second margin. Dion Smith (born 3 March 1993) is a New Zealand cyclist, who currently rides for UCI WorldTeam . Career Smith was born in Taupaki in Rodney District. He attended Massey High School. In September 2015 it was announced that he would join for the 2016 season. In June 2017, he was named in the startlist for the 2017 Tour de France. In stage six of the race, he was part of the sprint for the finish line and given the same time as the winner, Marcel Kittel. Patrick Bevin (born 15 February 1991) is a New Zealand professional road racing cyclist, who currently rides for UCI WorldTeam . Personal life Bevin grew up in Taupō. He moved to Cambridge in 2014 when the Avantidrome opened to train with the High Performance team of BikeNZ. His sister Kate is an elite martial artist. Mike Northey
Michael James Northey (born 24 March 1987 in Auckland) is a New Zealand former racing cyclist. He competed for New Zealand at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. In April 2016 Northey announced his retirement from competition due to heart damage he suffered after contracting a virus.
