Lake Mackenzie (Tasmania)
Lake Mackenzie is a lake in the Central Highlands area of Tasmania, Australia. The lake is formed by a dam and is part of Tasmania's hydro electric scheme operated by Hydro Tasmania. Water from Lake Mackenzie flows via canals, tunnels and pipes to the Fisher Power Station. The water drops 650 metres to Fisher then runs into Lake Parangana. Hydro Tasmania, known for most of its history as the Hydro-Electric Commission (HEC) or The Hydro, is the trading name of the Hydro-Electric Corporation, a Tasmanian Government business enterprise which is the predominant electricity generator in the state of Tasmania, Australia. The Hydro was originally oriented towards hydro-electricity, due to Tasmania's dramatic topography and relatively high rainfall in the central and western parts of the state. Today Hydro Tasmania operates thirty hydro-electric and one gas power station, and is a joint owner in three wind farms. The Minister for Energy, currently the Hon. Fisher Power Station
The Fisher Power Station is a conventional hydroelectric power station located in north-western Tasmania, Australia. Technical details Part of the MerseyForth scheme that comprises eight hydroelectric power stations, the Fisher Power Station is the second station in the scheme. The power station is located in the upper reaches of the Fisher River. The station is supplied with water from Lake Mackenzie, supplemented by water run-off from the plateau and by water pumped from Yeates Creek and Parsons Falls pumping stations. Water flow to the station is via a -long flume, siphon and canal and then a -long vertical shaft, inclined shaft, tunnel and surface penstock. The water descends from the lake to the power station and then flows before flowing into Lake Parangana (see Parangana Power Station). 2016 Tasmanian Bushfires
The 2016 Tasmanian Bushfires were a large series of bushfires in Tasmania which started in January 2016 throughout the state, and continued into February 2016, with considerable damage to fire sensitive areas in the Central Highlands, West Coast and South West regions. By autumn 2016, no bushfires were reported within the state. Number of fires Over the first 20 days of the fires, the actual number reported was larger in number, however at least 70 separate fires had been listed in the North West, West, South West and Central Highland areas of the island. These fires are different from the 2013 Tasmanian bushfires due to their spread, and to the large number being started by lightning strikes, and from the 1967 Tasmanian bushfires with no loss of human life.
