Lake Llano Grande
Estero Llano Grande State Park is located south of the city of Weslaco in Hidalgo County in the U.S. state of Texas. Background The land where the parks sits was part of the Llano Grande Land Grant granted to Juan José Hinojosa in 1776 by Charles IV of Spain. In early 2000, the state of Texas pieced together the current park from a variety of separate parcels. The Arroyo Colorado and Llano Grande Lake border the park on the south. Resaca (channel)
Resaca is the name given to a type of oxbow lake in the southern half of Cameron County, Texas. The resacas constitute former channels of the Rio Grande and are naturally cut off from the river, having no inlet or outlet. History The Rio Grande's water moves from Colorado to the Gulf of Mexico. Every year during spring, melted snow would flow into the Rio Grande, bringing seasonal flood waters to the most southern tip of Texas. Given the overflow of the river's main and distributary channel banks, the Rio Grande would carve new river channels, ''resacas.'' When the seasonal flooding ended and the river retreated, the newly formed oxbow lakes remained, creating ''resacas'' all throughout the Rio Grande Valley. It is located at the southern tip of Texas in the Rio Grande Valley near the Mexican border, across the Rio Grande from the city of Nuevo Progreso, Rio Bravo, Tamaulipas. Weslaco derives its name from the W.E. Stewart Land Company. It was the hometown of Harlon Block, one of the Marines photographed raising the flag at Iwo Jima, and of film and television actor David Spielberg. Streets north of the railroad tracks have Spanish names, and streets south of the railroad tracks bear names in English, as a consequence of a 1921 municipal ordinance which declared that land north of the tracks be reserved for Hispanic residences and businesses, and land south of the tracks be reserved for "Anglo" residences and businesses.
