Lake Hope State Park
Lake Hope State Park is a public recreation area encompassing within Zaleski State Forest, located northeast of Zaleski in Vinton County, Ohio. The state park is centered on Lake Hope, a impoundment on Big Sandy Run. History The park and lake are named after the former mining village of Hope, Ohio. The original town of Hope still stands under the waters of Lake Hope. The town was flooded up to the side of a cliff, which is now used as the swimming area. There is still one original building standing, The old one-room Hope School still stands nearby, in the state forest, and has been renovated for use as a community meeting place. The Moonville Rail-Trail passes close by. Within the park is the old Hope Furnace, which once smelted iron ore mined out of the area's hills. Vinton County is a county located in the U.S. state of Ohio. As of the 2020 census, the population was 12,800, making it the least populous county in the state. Its county seat is McArthur. The county is named for Samuel Finley Vinton, US Representative from Ohio (1823–37, 1843–51). Moonville Rail-Trail
King Switch Tunnel The Moonville Rail-Trail is a sixteen-mile (25 kilometer) rail-trail in southeast Ohio, located in Vinton and Athens Counties. It is largely embedded in the Zaleski State Forest and passes close to Lake Hope State Park. The trail is named after the Moonville Tunnel through which it passes. The trail is built on the grade of a railroad originally built as part of the Marietta and Cincinnati Railroad, which ran between its namesake cities. The M&C was acquired by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad becoming its Southwestern Division. The B&O was merged into the Chessie System Railroads, which was then merged into CSX Transportation. CSX abandoned parts and sold parts of the old M&C line in stages during the late 1980s. Track was removed from the abandoned sections. Hope Furnace
The Hope Furnace is a historic blast furnace in the southeastern part of the U.S. state of Ohio. Located along State Route 278, approximately northeast of the village of Zaleski, it is one of two extant iron furnaces in Vinton County. Between 1854 and 1874, the furnace was used to smelt iron ore, using coal or charcoal for fuel. One-room schools, or schoolhouses, were commonplace throughout rural portions of various countries, including Prussia, Norway, Sweden, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Spain. Hope, Ohio
Hope is an unincorporated community in Brown Township, Vinton County, Ohio. History Hope once contained an iron blast furnace. A post office called Hope Furnace was established in 1865, and remained in operation until 1890. Lake Hope State Park, which gets its name from the town, is located nearby and covers part of the town. There are two buildings remaining from the town of Hope, one is the one-room Hope Schoolhouse, which has been renovated and is used for meetings, as a visitors center, and provides exhibits and educational programs on the area's history and culture. The other is an old abandoned Church located on Wheelabout Road south of the schoolhouse, but is in very poor condition.
