Lake Brownwood
Lake Brownwood is a reservoir on Jim Ned Creek and Pecan Bayou in Brown County, Texas, United States. After a devastating flood in 1900, the citizens of Brown County created the Brown County Water Improvement District by election in 1926. The water district acquired the land necessary and built a dam to impound the waters of Pecan Bayou at its confluence with Jim Ned Creek. Dam construction started in 1930 and was completed in 1933. A large flood filled the reservoir in July 1932 but the water was released to complete construction of the dam. Deliberate impoundment of the reservoir began in July 1933. Brown County, Texas
Brown County is a county in west-central Texas. As of the 2020 census, the population was 38,095. Its county seat is Brownwood. The county was founded in 1856 and organized in 1858. It is named for Henry Stevenson Brown, a commander at the Battle of Velasco, an early conflict between Texians and Mexicans. The Brownwood, TX Micropolitan Statistical Area includes all of Brown County. History Indigenous peoples lived here for thousands of years before Europeans entered the area. The historic inhabitants were the Penteka (also known to the Europeans as Comanche), who occupied this area at the time of European colonization. In 1721, the Marqués de San Miguel de Aguayo expedition is said to have passed through the county. In 1838, land surveys were made of the area. In 1856, Welcome W. Pecan Bayou (Colorado River Tributary)
Pecan Bayou is a slow-moving stream in Callahan County, Texas. The stream is fed by over twenty creeks and is one of the major tributaries of the Colorado River in Texas. It may be the westernmost bayou in the United States. A dam on Pecan Bayou seven miles north of Brownwood forms Lake Brownwood. Lake Brownwood is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Brown County in central Texas, United States. The population was 1,532 at the 2010 census. Geography The Lake Brownwood CDP is located in western Brown County at (31.823538, -99.094827), along the western arm of Lake Brownwood, a reservoir on Jim Ned Creek and Pecan Bayou. The CDP is northwest of Brownwood, the county seat. According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of , of which are land and , or 15.77%, are covered by water. Lake Brownwood State Park is a state park located on the shore of Lake Brownwood in Brown County, Texas, United States and is administered by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. The 537.5 acre park was acquired by deed from the Brown County Water Improvement District No. 1 in 1933. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) developed the park between 1934 and 1942. The park opened in 1938. History The citizens of Brown County voted in 1926 to organize the Brown County Water Improvement District for the purpose of creating a reservoir to control flooding along Pecan Bayou. The dam was completed in 1932 and the reservoir filled the same year. In 1933, the Texas State Parks Board acquired the deed for the land for the state park from the water improvement district.
