Lake Bluff Uptown Commercial Historic District
The Lake Bluff Uptown Commercial Historic District is the historic downtown district of Lake Bluff, Illinois, United States. There are fourteen properties in the district; of these, six buildings, one site, and one object contribute to its historic fabric as contributing properties. History Lake Bluff, Illinois was first settled in 1836. In the mid-1870s, the Lake Bluff Camp Meeting Association, a Methodist Episcopal camp, was founded on . Most structures at that point were of contemporary architectural styles, but were mostly one-story wood-frame buildings. In the late 1890ss, the Camp Meeting Association closed and its lands were immediately considered as a commercial district due to its proximity to the Chicago and North Western Railway tracks. The lands were platted in 1896. James Hobbs, the former president of Camp Meeting Association and president of the Chicago Board of Trade, oversaw Lake Bluff's early development. Lake Bluff, Illinois
Lake Bluff is a village in Lake County, Illinois, United States. Per the 2020 census, the population was 5,616. History The first settler family to claim land within the area now part of Lake Bluff arrived in 1836. They claimed 100 acres of land extending from the lake west to the Green Bay Trail. In 1849, a few residents left to seek their fortune in the California gold rush. In 1837, William and Mary Dwyer claimed the land just north of the former Central School. They opened and operated a stage coach stop and tavern along the Green Bay Trail. Some of the other early settlers were Henry and Angeline Ostrander, James Cole and William Whitnell. In 1855, the first railroad through Lake County was completed, running from Chicago through the county line. Henry Ostrander owned the land where the depot was to be placed, and he agreed to donate the site if the depot were called "Rockland." Prairie School is a late 19th- and early 20th-century architectural style, most common in the Midwestern United States. The style is usually marked by horizontal lines, flat or hipped roofs with broad overhanging eaves, windows grouped in horizontal bands, integration with the landscape, solid construction, craftsmanship, and discipline in the use of ornament. Horizontal lines were thought to evoke and relate to the wide, flat, treeless expanses of America's native prairie landscape. The John Griffith Store Building is an American historic commercial building at 103–113 E. Scranton Avenue in Lake Bluff, Illinois. Built in 1925–26 by businessman John Griffith, the building originally housed four storefronts and several second-floor apartments. Architect Stanley Anderson of the firm Anderson, Ticknor & Fox, who designed several of neighboring Lake Forest's major institutional buildings and many of its homes, designed the store in the Colonial Revival style. The store's size and brick construction allowed it to stand out from Lake Bluff's other commercial buildings, most of which were smaller wooden structures; the use of the then-popular Colonial Revival style further distinguished it from its older and more modest neighbors.
