Lake Avenue (Pasadena)
Lake Avenue is a major north–south feeder road for the Pasadena and Altadena communities in Los Angeles County, California. The road was developed in the mid 19th century and takes its name from a lake which was located at its southernmost end known variously as Mission Lake, Kewen Lake, and Wilson Lake reflecting different owners of the land. The lake bed still exists as a municipal park (Lacy Park) in the City of San Marino just south of the Raymond Dike, but it holds no water. It has been surrounded by residences who are served by a crisscross set of roads that dip into the edges of impression and back out the other side. Lake Avenue is approximately in length. Transportation Metro Local line 662 and Pasadena Transit line 20 run on Lake Avenue: the former starts at Del Mar Boulevard and the latter through most of Lake Avenue between California Boulevard and Woodbury Road. Mount Wilson Toll Road
The Mount Wilson Toll Road (1891–1936) is a historic roadway which ascended Mount Wilson via a vehicular passable road from the base of the foothills in Altadena. It was accessible from Pasadena via Santa Anita Avenue (nowadays the north-south portion of Altadena Drive) which drove right to the front porch of the toll house. The road is still accessible to non-motorized traffic (hikers, bicyclists, and horses) by way of Eaton Canyon (either from the Nature Center entrance, or an access gate on Pinecrest Drive, just off Altadena Drive in Altadena). Segments of it have been closed at various times due to landslides. A 2005 landslide destroyed 50 yards of the road, but it has since been rebuilt and reopened. Colorado Boulevard (or Colorado Street in Glendale and Arcadia) is a major east–west street in Southern California. Fair Oaks Avenue in Pasadena, California, is a major north–south road connecting the communities of Altadena, Pasadena, and South Pasadena, running in length. Pasadena Via Oak Knoll Line
The Pasadena via Oak Knoll Line was an interurban route of the Pacific Electric Railway. It operated from 1906 until 1950, between Downtown Los Angeles and Downtown Pasadena, California. Cars ran as far as Altadena during rush hours. History The route was originally built in 1906 to reach the Wentworth Hotel (later Huntington Hotel) in Oak Knoll from El Molino and was thusly known as the Wentworth Line, a designation it retained for some time. It tied into the Monrovia–Glendora Line. The routing through Pasadena was changed in 1913 to Lake Avenue, Colorado Street, Raymond Avenue, and through the car house on Fair Oaks Avenue. North Lake Line
The North Lake Line was a local Pacific Electric Railway route serving Pasadena until 1941. History Tracks on North Lake Avenue were constructed by the Highland Street Railway Company in early 1894. By 1911, inbound cars on the line were through routed to North Orange Grove Avenue. In January 1913, the line was rerouted via Mendocino Street to Allen Avenue; the branch to Country Club Park on Mendocino Street became the outer terminus that same year. Car 1602 suffered a runaway on the line in 1916, and a derail was installed on Lake south of Mariposa Street to mitigate future issues on the descent from Mt. Lowe. Through routing was changed in July 1923 to the Altadena via the North Fair Oaks Avenue Line, almost forming a loop service. Sam Merrill Trail
The Sam Merrill Trail is a major hiking trail in the Las Flores Canyon of the San Gabriel Mountain Range north of Altadena, California, which leads to the top of Echo Mountain. It was built by Charles Warner and the Forest Conservation Club of Pasadena during the 1930s. After the deluge of 1938 most of the trails that accessed the mountain sides around Echo Mountain and the Mount Lowe Railway had been all but washed away. Sam Merrill found it important to maintain public hiking access to the railway ruins and other portions of the treacherous foothill. During the 1940s he overhauled and maintained the trail.
