Laisterdyke
Laisterdyke is an area of Bradford, West Yorkshire, England, situated to the east of the city on the border with City of Leeds and located in the Bradford Moor ward and in the Bradford East parliamentary constituency. Laisterdyke borders Barkerend, Bradford Moor area, Thornbury, Tyersal, and Bowling. History The Leeds-Bradford railway line passes through Laisterdyke however Laisterdyke railway station itself was closed to passengers in 1966. At Laisterdyke was a complex set of junctions controlled by Laisterdyke East and Laisterdyke West signal boxes on the Leeds-Bradford line. Shipley And Windhill Line
The Shipley Great Northern Railway branch line was a railway line that ran east, south and then westwards from Shipley to Bradford in West Yorkshire. The route was opened in 1874 to goods traffic and then to passengers in 1875 by the Great Northern Railway (GNR) and looped around the eastern edge of Bradford. The GNR arrived after other railways had been established in the West Yorkshire area and many of their lines were heavily reliant on tunnels and grand viaducts, the Shipley and Windhill line being an exception to this, although it did have some steep gradients. The branch extended for between the two termini of Shipley Windhill and Bradford Exchange. The route as built from Laisterdyke to Shipley was actually only as the initial section from Bradford Exchange to Laisterdyke was already in existence as part of the Great Northern Railway's line to Leeds. Laisterdyke Railway Station
Laisterdyke railway station is a closed station in the city of Bradford, West Yorkshire, England, that served the suburb of the same name. History The station was opened on 1 August 1854 on the Leeds, Bradford and Halifax Junction Railway's Leeds to line. Three years later, a second route from the station to via and Morley (Top) was opened by the same company, making the station a junction of some importance. Further construction by the ambitious Great Northern led to the addition of branches to Wakefield via Adwalton and in 1864, Shipley in 1875 and Pudsey (Greenside) in 1893. The facilities provided here were consequently quite generous, with four platforms, two signal boxes and a sizeable goods yard. The branch to Shipley was an early casualty of road competition, losing its passenger service in February 1931. Laisterdyke Leadership Academy
Laisterdyke Leadership Academy is a co-educational secondary school and sixth form located in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England. History Following the re-organisation of education in the local education authority (LEA) in September 1999 the school changed from a middle school for pupils aged 8 to 13 to its current designation. In September 2002, Laisterdyke High School admitted its first intake of sixth form students and became an 11 to 18 school. The school previously gained Business and Enterprise College status and was renamed Laisterdyke Business and Enterprise College. In April 2016 the school was converted to academy status and was renamed Laisterdyke Leadership Academy. The school is now part Star Academies. Bradford Moor is a ward in the metropolitan borough of the City of Bradford, West Yorkshire, England. It contains six listed buildings that are recorded in the National Heritage List for England. All the listed buildings are designated at Grade II, the lowest of the three grades, which is applied to "buildings of national importance and special interest". Thornbury, West Yorkshire
Thornbury is an area of Bradford, in West Yorkshire, England on the border with the City of Leeds. Thornbury is located in the Bradford Moor ward and the Bradford East parliamentary constituency. Thornbury is contiguous with Pudsey – part of the City of Leeds conurbation and borders Laisterdyke, and Fagley in Eccleshill ward. History Thornbury was originally a distinct village but became part of Bradford in 1882. In the late 19th and early 20th century, Thornbury was the seat of various enterprises such as Crofts Engineering and John Sharp & Co textile manufacturing machine engineers and the Phoenix Dynamo Manufacturing Company. Les Kellett
Leslie Kellett (1915 – 9 January 2002) was an English professional wrestler who rose to prominence due to the popularity of televised wrestling in the 1960s and 1970s. He was born in Laisterdyke, Bradford, West Riding of Yorkshire, the son of Bill Kellett, a Bradford engineer, and Sarah Kellett. Les was an engineer in the merchant navy and was demobbed in Manchester, where a meeting with Joe Hill led him to consider life as a professional wrestler. During the 1950s he earned between £40 and £50 and was fighting five to six times a week all over the country. In the 1960s Kellett was nominated for the ITV Sports Personality of the Year and was presented to Prince Philip at the Royal Albert Hall in the 1970s. Barkerend
Barkerend is an inner-city area of Bradford, West Yorkshire, England, east of the city centre and surrounded by Undercliffe Cemetery, Bradford Moor, Laisterdyke, Bowling, Broomfields, Little Germany and Wapping, including an area of modern housing known as Pollard Park. History Off Barkerend roundabout was the now partially demolished Barkerend Mills. These mills were established in 1815 as a steam powered worsted spinning mill. Bradford Moor is an electoral ward within the City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council. The population of the ward at the 2011 Census was 21,210. The ward includes the areas of Laisterdyke and Thornbury. History Bradford Moor Barracks were located at the corner of Leeds Old Road and Killinghall Road. Geography The ward covers the areas of Bradford known as Bradford Moor, Laisterdyke and Thornbury.
