Laish (band)
Laish () is a British folk rock band led by songwriter, guitarist and singer Danny Green. History The band was formed in Brighton in 2008 and became part of the Willkommen Collective, the Brighton alternative folk scene which included the bands Sons of Noel and Adrian and The Leisure Society. Green was also a member of Sons of Noel and Adrian during 2008-2014. The band's self-titled debut album was recorded at Green's home and released on Willkommen Records in December 2010. It received favourable reviews from Mojo Magazine, The Blue Walrus and Ondarock. Laish have appeared at UK festivals including No Direction Home and End of the Road. Their second album, ''Obituaries'', was recorded at Green's home and was released via Folkwit Records. It received positive reviews from A Musical Priority, Louder than War, Ondarock and Folkgeek. Folk Rock
Folk rock is a hybrid music genre that combines the elements of folk and rock music, which arose in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom in the mid-1960s. In the U.S., folk rock emerged from the folk music revival. Performers such as Bob Dylan and the Byrds—several of whose members had earlier played in folk ensembles—attempted to blend the sounds of rock with their pre-existing folk repertoire, adopting the use of electric instrumentation and drums in a way previously discouraged in the U.S. folk community. Indie Rock
Indie rock is a Music subgenre, subgenre of rock music that originated in the United States, United Kingdom and New Zealand from the 1970s to the 1980s. Originally used to describe independent record labels, the term became associated with the music they produced and was initially used interchangeably with alternative rock or "Pop rock, guitar pop rock". One of the primary scenes of the movement was Dunedin, where Dunedin sound, a cultural scene based around a convergence of noise pop and jangle became popular among the city's University of Otago, large student population. Willkommen Collective
The Willkommen Collective is a Brighton-based community of musicians, promoters and artists. The collective includes the bands Sons of Noel and Adrian, The Leisure Society, Kristin McClement, The Climbers, The Miserable Rich, Shoreline and many more. They also run a record label, Willkommen Records, and put on monthly gigs in Brighton, England. The bands share many members and often work collectively. History In May 2009, Willkommen Collective ran three shows as part of a residency at the Brighton Festival. In June, July and August 2009 the collective ran a series of shows dubbed the "Willkommen takeover..." series including an event at the Union Chapel, Islington, Stanmer House and De La Warr Pavilion. Sons Of Noel And Adrian
Sons of Noel and Adrian is an experimental band based in Brighton, England. They are known for their live performances with up to thirteen musicians on stage, all of whom play with many other bands. They are one of the founding groups of the Willkommen Collective. Historyamaolpdx The band's debut self-titled album was released worldwide in April 2010 (distributed by Shellshock), coinciding with a seven date tour of Germany and ten date tour of the UK. The Leisure Society
The Leisure Society are an English rock band formed by Nick Hemming and Christian Hardy of Burton upon Trent. History Hemming was formerly of early 1990s indie band She Talks to Angels, which included actor Paddy Considine, and film director Shane Meadows. Hemming wrote and performed music for the films ''A Room for Romeo Brass'' and '' Dead Man's Shoes''. He was also a member of The Telescopes. In 2006 Hemming moved to London to work with multi-instrumentalist and producer Christian Hardy; the pair have subsequently built a live band drawn from members of Brighton's Willkommen Collective and further afield, notably Mike Siddell who previously played violin with Hope of the States and The Miserable Rich and currently performs with Lightspeed Champion and Troubles. Emma Gatrill
Emma Gatrill is a multi-instrumentalist based in Brighton, UK. She is primarily a harpist, clarinetist and singer. Her debut album, ''Chapter I'' (2012), was a collection of harp songs accompanied by various members of the Willkommen Collective. Gatrill released her second album, ''Cocoon'', in 2017 via the Japanese label Flau. Critics noted that the arrangements drew from a much wider and often darker sonic palette – introducing vintage monosynths, drum machines and vibraphone. Stereogum's review compared her music to Julia Holter and Sufjan Stevens. Talitres, formerly known as Talitres Records, is a French independent record label based in Bordeaux, founded in 2000 and specializing in indie pop and folk music. It began as a way to release music from indie rock bands that were not distributed in France and Europe, and has expanded to include various artists from all around the world.
