Laila Samad
Laila Samad (3 April 1928 – 10 August 1989) was a Bangladeshis, Bangladeshi journalist, writer and actress. She was awarded Bangla Academy Literary Award in 1981 by the Government of Bangladesh. Biography Samad was born on 3 April 1928 in Kolkata, West Bengal, British India. She studied in Sakhawat Memorial School and Nari Shikshika Mandir. She went to Lady Brabourne College and Ashutosh College. She married her cousin, Mirza Abdus Samad, in 1946. He finished her M.A. from the University of Calcutta in 1959. In 1950, Samad joined the magazine Begum (magazine), Begum. She worked from 1951 to 1954 at The Daily Sangbad. From 1954 to 1958, she worked at the Anannya Magazine. In 1970 she worked in the Bichitra magazine. She also acted in stage dramas and directed them in the 1950s. Samad died on 10 August 1989 in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Dhaka Ladies Club
Dhaka Ladies Club is a club for "elite" women in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Jahanara Munnan is the present president of the club. History The club was opened in 1951 by a selected number of "elite" women. The founder of the club was Shamsia Shahbuddin who was the wife of the then Chief Justice' of East Pakistan Justice Shahabuddin. In 1955 one acre of land was bought in Eskaton, Dhaka by the then President of the club, Begum Amiruddin. The club was registered under Joint Stock companies Act in 1960. The club is run 16 members Executive Committee who are elected for terms of three years. The club runs regular and music schools for underprivileged children in Dhaka. Bichitra is a defunct weekly literary magazine. It was owned by the Government of Bangladesh and edited by Shahadat Chowdhury. The magazine has been described as a historic milestone and a pioneering magazine. History Fazal Shahabuddin is the founding editor of the magazine. It was founded in 1972. Bichitra was the first publication in Bangladesh to issue a special Eid edition. Ziaur Rahman talked about his role in the Bangladesh Liberation war and the leadership of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in an article in the magazine in 1972. On 17 May 1978, the Tokai, by Rafiqun Nabi, was first published in the magazine. The cartoon would go on to achieve iconic status in Bangladesh. ''Begum'' is a Bengali-language monthly magazine founded in 1947. It was Bengal's first illustrated women's weekly. It covered the work of Bengali women in literary activities. History After founding '' Saogat'' magazine in 1918, Mohammad Nasiruddin decided to publish a separate magazine solely focusing on Bengali women issues. He began the publication of ''Begum'' on July 20, 1947, from Calcutta, India. The first issue had a print run of 500 copies and each copy was priced 4 annas. Women's rights activist Begum Rokeya’s photo was published on the cover of that issue. Poet and activist Begum Sufia Kamal was a founding editor. In 1950, the publication base shifted to Dhaka. Nasiruddin's daughter, Nurjahan Begum, joined as a journalist and editor; making her as the first Bangladeshi female journalist.
