Lagos ( Nigerian English: ; ) is the largest city in Nigeria and the second most populous city in Africa, with a population of 15.4 million as of 2015 within the city proper. Lagos was the national capital of Nigeria until December 1991 following the government's decision to move their capital to Abuja in the center of the country. Tinubu Square (formerly Independence Square), is an open space landmark located in Broad Street, Lagos, Broad Street, Lagos Island, Lagos State, Nigeria named after the Yoruba people, Yoruba slave trader, merchant, and aristocrat Madam Efunroye Tinubu. It was formerly called ''Ita Tinubu'' before it was named ''Independence Square'' by leaders of the First Nigerian Republic after Nigerian independence and subsequently ''Tinubu Square''. History According to a historian, it was the location of the first court of justice which was replaced in 1918 by the Supreme court, Supreme Court or the Courts of Assizes, Court of Assizes, which was a magnificent structure.
