The Lagoon 35, also called the Lagoon 35CCC (Coastal Cruising Catamaran), is a French catamaran sailboat that was designed by Americans Morrelli and Melvin as a cruiser and first built in 1995. Production The design was built by Jeanneau's Lagoon catamaran division in France, which later became part of Construction Navale Bordeaux (CNB), now part of Groupe Beneteau. It was also built by TPI Composites in the US. Production started in 1995 with 11 built. Design The Lagoon 35 is a recreational sailing catamaran, built predominantly of fiberglass. It has a fractional sloop rig, with a deck-stepped mast, one set of triangular spreaders and aluminum spars with stainless steel wire rigging. The twin hulls have plumb stems, reverse transoms with steps, twin internally mounted spade-type rudders and a twin fixed fin keels. It displaces empty and carries no ballast. Morrelli And Melvin
Pete Melvin (born January 11, 1962) is an American sailor. He competed in the Tornado event at the 1988 Summer Olympics. Melvin is also a noted yacht designer with his partner Gino Morrelli as Morrelli and Melvin. Biography Melvin was born in Jackson, Mississippi in 1962. He spent his early years living in Florida. He gained a degree in aerospace engineering from Boston University after graduating in 1985. For five years, Melvin worked in aircraft design at McDonnell Douglas. Melvin competed in trials for the 1976 Summer Olympics, 1980 Summer Olympics, and the 1984 Summer Olympics. At the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, Melvin competed in the Tornado event, finishing in 14th place. Between 1997 and 2005, Melvin won three World Championships, and he has also won 25 national titles. In 1994, along with Gino Morrelli, Melvin designed the Hobie Wave catamaran. Hull Speed
Hull speed or displacement speed is the speed at which the wavelength of a vessel's bow wave is equal to the waterline length of the vessel. As boat speed increases from rest, the wavelength of the bow wave increases, and usually its crest-to-trough dimension (height) increases as well. When hull speed is exceeded, a vessel in displacement mode will appear to be climbing up the back of its bow wave. From a technical perspective, at hull speed the bow and stern waves interfere constructively, creating relatively large waves, and thus a relatively large value of wave drag. Ship drag for a displacement hull increases smoothly with speed as hull speed is approached and exceeded, often with no noticeable inflection at hull speed. Head (watercraft)
The head (pl. heads) is a ship's toilet. The name derives from sailing ships in which the toilet area for the regular sailors was placed at the head or bow of the ship. Design In sailing ships, the toilet was placed in the bow somewhat above the water line with vents or slots cut near the floor level allowing normal wave action to wash out the facility. Only the captain had a private toilet near his quarters, at the stern of the ship in the quarter gallery. Reverse Transom
A transom is the vertical reinforcement which strengthens the stern of a boat. This flat termination of the stern is typically above the waterline. The term was used as far back as Middle English in the 1300s, having come from Latin ''transversus'' (transverse) via Old French ''traversain'' (set crosswise). The stern of a boat is typically vertical. It can be raked such that there is an overhang above the water, as at the bow. A reverse transom is angled from the waterline forwards. Transoms can be used to support a rudder, outboard motor, or as a swimming and access platform.
