Lafayette Township is one of the twenty-two townships of Coshocton County, Ohio, United States. The 2020 census reported 4,250 people living in the township. Geography Located in the southeastern part of the county, it borders the following townships: * White Eyes Township - north * Adams Township - northeast corner * Oxford Township - east * Linton Township - south * Franklin Township - southwest * Tuscarawas Township - west * Keene Township - northwest corner The village of West Lafayette is located in northeastern Lafayette Township. Name and history Lafayette Township was the last township in Coshocton County to be organized, in 1835. It was named for Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette, whose death had occurred in 1834. Statewide, the only other Lafayette Township is located in Medina County. Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de La Fayette (6 September 1757 – 20 May 1834), known in the United States as Lafayette (, ), was a French aristocrat, freemasonry, freemason and military officer who fought in the American Revolutionary War, commanding American troops in several battles, including the Siege of Yorktown (1781), siege of Yorktown. After returning to France, he was a key figure in the French Revolution of 1789 and the July Revolution of 1830. He has been considered a national hero in both countries. Lafayette was born into a wealthy land-owning family in Chavaniac-Lafayette, Chavaniac in the History of Auvergne, province of Auvergne in south central France. West Lafayette, Ohio
West Lafayette is a village in Coshocton County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,321 at the 2010 census. History West Lafayette was laid out in 1850 by Robert Shaw and William Wheeler. In 1855, the Steubenville and Indiana Railroad was built through the new town. The line became known as the Panhandle Route and was operated in the Pennsylvania Railroad system and currently by the Columbus and Ohio River Railroad (Ohio Central Railroad System). Tragedy struck this track on September 11, 1950 when the crack passenger train "Spirit of St. Louis" hit another train carrying 600 men of the 109th Field Artillery Battalion of the Pennsylvania National Guard. 33 men were killed. A memorial was placed near the site of the accident in 1990. A 105mm howitzer is at the memorial also, commemorating the manufacture of 105mm shells at Moore Enamelling across the tracks during WWII.
