Lafayette McLaws
Lafayette McLaws ( ; January 15, 1821 – July 24, 1897) was a United States Army officer and a Confederate general in the American Civil War. He served at Antietam and Fredericksburg, where Robert E. Lee praised his defense of Marye's Heights, and at Gettysburg, where his division made successful assaults through the Peach Orchard and Wheatfield, but was unable to dislodge Union forces from Cemetery Ridge. After the Knoxville Campaign, he was court-martialed for inefficiency, though this was overturned for procedural reasons. Finally he was sent to his native Georgia to resist Sherman's March to the Sea, but had to retreat through the Carolinas, losing many men through desertion, and is presumed to have surrendered with Joseph E. Johnston in April 1865. McLaws remained bitter about his court-martial, especially since the charges had been filed by James Longstreet, his friend and classmate at West Point, with whom he had served for years. LaFayette "Fayette" McMullen (May 18, 1805 – November 8, 1880) was a 19th-century politician, driver, teamster and banker from the U.S. state of Virginia and the second appointed Governor of Washington Territory. Early life and family Born in Estillville, Virginia, McMullen attended private schools as a child. He was a Virginia driver and teamster, working in the family owned business and driving a coach. He married Mary (Polly) Wood, daughter of the sheriff, in 1826. They had no children. Career McMullen became a member of the Senate of Virginia in 1839, serving until 1849. Lafayette Leake (June 1, 1919 – August 14, 1990) was an American blues and jazz pianist, organist, vocalist and composer who played for Chess Records as a session musician, and as a member of the Big Three Trio, during the formative years of Chicago blues. He played piano on many of Chuck Berry's recordings. Biography Leake was born in Winona, Missouri, United States, in 1919. Information about his early years is sparse, but in the early 1950s he joined the Big Three Trio (replacing Leonard Caston) and began his association with Chess Records, where he worked closely with bassist, producer, and songwriter Willie Dixon. Lafayette Lane (November 12, 1842 – November 23, 1896) was an American lawyer and politician who served one term as a United States House of Representatives, US Representative from the U.S. state of Oregon from 1875 to 1877. He was the son of Oregon List of United States Senators from Oregon, Senator Joseph Lane and an uncle of future Oregon Senator Harry Lane. Early life Lane was born near Evansville, Indiana, to then-Indiana state senator Joseph Lane and his wife Polly Hart Lane, one of 10 children. When Joseph was appointed governor of Oregon Territory in 1848, the Lanes moved west along the Oregon Trail, arriving in Oregon in March 1849. Lafayette Ronald Hubbard (March 13, 1911 – January 24, 1986) was an American author, primarily of science fiction and fantasy stories, who is best known for having founded the Church of Scientology. In 1950, Hubbard authored '' Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health'' and established a series of organizations to promote Dianetics. In 1952, Hubbard lost the rights to Dianetics in bankruptcy proceedings, and he subsequently founded Scientology. Lafayette Holbrook (September 7, 1850 – January 1, 1941) was mayor of Provo, Utah, from 1894 to 1897 and an unsuccessful candidate for the United States House of Representatives in 1896. Holbrook was born in Salt Lake City in the Provisional State of Deseret, just two days before Utah Territory was created. A year after his birth his father, Chandler Holbrook, helped found Fillmore, Utah, and that is where Holbrook was raised. He was a nephew of Utah politician Joseph Holbrook. Lafayette Head (April 9, 1825 – March 8, 1897) was the first Lieutenant Governor of Colorado, serving from 1876 to 1879 under Governor John Long Routt. Early life and family Lafayette Head was born at Head's Fort, Howard County, Missouri. His grandfather, William Head, was a Revolutionary War veteran and a pioneer settler of central Missouri, arriving about 1811. Lafayette's parents, Alfred R. Head and Margaret Heard, also had daughters Eliza Jane (born 1821; married Nathan Hall Downing) and Barthena (born 1827; married John Thomas Gray). Alfred Head died in 1830.
