Lady Barron Falls
The Lady Barron Falls, a tieredcascade waterfall on the Lady Barron Creek, is located in the Central Highlands region of Tasmania, Australia. Location and features The Lady Barron Falls are situated in the Mount Field National Park, a short distance from Russell Falls, approximately northwest of Hobart via the Brooker and Lyell highways; and are a popular tourist attraction. The waterfall descends over horizontal marine Permian siltstone benches, while the vertical faces of the falls are composed of resistant sandstone layers. The waterfall is named in honour of Lady Clara Barron, the wife of Sir Harry Barron, a former Governor of Tasmania. The Permian ( ) is a geologic period and stratigraphic system which spans 47 million years from the end of the Carboniferous Period million years ago (Mya), to the beginning of the Triassic Period 251.9 Mya. It is the last period of the Paleozoic Era; the following Triassic Period belongs to the Mesozoic Era. A waterfall is a point in a river or stream where water flows over a vertical drop or a series of steep drops. Waterfalls also occur where meltwater drops over the edge of a tabular iceberg or ice shelf. Lady Barron, Tasmania
Lady Barron is a small settlement on the southern end of Flinders Island, in the local government area of Flinders in the North-east region of Tasmania. It is located about south-east of the town of Whitemark. The 2016 census determined a population of 158 for the state suburb of Lady Barron. It is the second largest town on Flinders Island, after Whitemark. The town has a small airport and a ferry terminal for the Bridport to Flinders Island ferry service. It appears to have been named for Clara, wife of Major General Sir Harry Barron, who was Governor of Tasmania from 1909 to 1913. The Barrons married in 1877 and had a daughter. Harry Barron
Major General Sir Harry Barron, (11 August 1847 – 27 March 1921) was a British Army officer who served as Governor of Tasmania from 1909 to 1913, and Governor of Western Australia from 1913 to 1917. Life Barron was born in 1847 and attended Stubbington House School. In 1877 he married Clara Emily, daughter of Major General T. Conyngham Kelly; they had one daughter. Barron was Governor of Tasmania from 1909 to 1913, and Governor of Western Australia from 1913 to 1917. In 1920, he was made colonel commandant of the Royal Artillery. Sandstone
Sandstone is a clastic sedimentary rock composed mainly of sand-sized (0.0625 to 2 mm) silicate grains. Sandstones comprise about 20–25% of all sedimentary rocks. Most sandstone is composed of quartz or feldspar (both silicates) because they are the most resistant minerals to weathering processes at the Earth's surface. Like uncemented sand, sandstone may be any color due to impurities within the minerals, but the most common colors are tan, brown, yellow, red, grey, pink, white, and black. Since sandstone beds often form highly visible cliffs and other topographic features, certain colors of sandstone have been strongly identified with certain regions. Siltstone, also known as aleurolite, is a clastic sedimentary rock that is composed mostly of silt. It is a form of mudrock with a low clay mineral content, which can be distinguished from shale by its lack of fissility.Blatt ''et al.'' 1980, pp.381-382 Although its permeability and porosity is relatively low, siltstone is sometimes a tight gas reservoir rock, an unconventional reservoir for natural gas that requires hydraulic fracturing for economic gas production. Lyell Highway
The Lyell Highway (Route A10) is a highway in Tasmania, running from Hobart to Queenstown. It is the one of two transport routes that passes through the West Coast Range, the other being the Anthony Road. Name The name is derived from Mount Lyell, the mountain peak where copper was found in the late 19th century; the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company was the predominant business in Queenstown for almost 100 years. Hobart to Central Highlands section Starting at Granton it winds along the southern side of the Derwent River in a generally north westerly direction to New Norfolk.
