Lac Memphrémagog
Lake Memphremagog (; french: Lac Memphrémagog) is a fresh water glacial lake located between Newport, Vermont, United States and Magog, Quebec, Canada. The lake spans both Quebec and Vermont, but is mostly in Quebec. Most of the watershed that feeds the lake is located in Vermont, and is a source for accumulated phosphorus, sediments and other pollutants. Cleanup efforts since the late 1980s have improved the water quality. The lake furnishes potable water for 200,000 people. Physical characteristics The lake is long with 73 percent of the lake's surface area in Quebec, where it drains into the Magog River. However, three-quarters of its watershed, , is in Vermont. Drainage Basin
A drainage basin is an area of land where all flowing surface water converges to a single point, such as a river mouth, or flows into another body of water, such as a lake or ocean. Province Island
Province Island (french: Île de la Province) is an island mostly in the Canadian province of Québec, but partly in the U.S. state of Vermont. It is situated in Lake Memphremagog. The island's area is . Although (9%) at its southern point is part of the United States (in the town of Derby, Vermont), the greater part belongs to the municipality of Ogden, Quebec, in Memphrémagog Regional County Municipality, Quebec. At the end of the 18th century a pioneer named Martin Adams and his wife built a house on the island, where they grew flax and vegetables. Lake Willoughby
Lake Willoughby is a lake in the town of Westmore in Orleans County in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, United States. The lake's southern end is surrounded by the Willoughby State Forest. This state forest includes Mount Pisgah, Mount Hor, collectively "Willoughby Gap". In 2010, Yankee magazine named Willoughby as the third best lake in New England. Willoughby Lake has a public beach that stretches on the north shore of the lake, or in the zone of the lake outlet. Another public beach is located at the bottom of the South Bay of the Lake. Stanstead, Quebec (township)
Stanstead is a township municipality of about 1,100 people in the Memphrémagog Regional County Municipality in the Estrie region of Quebec. It is not to be confused with the city of Stanstead, which is nearby although not directly adjacent (the municipality of Ogden lies in between). Formally, the township consists of two villages: Fitch Bay (founded in 1855) and Georgeville (founded in the 1890s). Both villages formed as a result of English-speaking migrants from the United States state of Vermont until borderline customs stations were established after 1920. Today, the population is bilingual with predominance in French language (about 64%). Potton is a township municipality of about 2,010 people in the Memphrémagog Regional County Municipality. It is located on the western shore of Lake Memphremagog in the Estrie (Eastern Townships) region of Quebec, and is one of the municipalities in Brome County.
