Labour Of Lust
''Labour of Lust'' is an album by British singer-songwriter Nick Lowe. Also produced by Lowe, it was released in 1979 by Radar Records in the UK and Columbia Records in the US. It was recorded and released at the same time as Dave Edmunds' ''Repeat When Necessary'' and features the same Rockpile personnel. It led off with "Cruel to Be Kind," Lowe's only major US hit. The American version of this record had a slightly different track listing, with "Endless Grey Ribbon" being deleted and replaced with the UK single A-side, "American Squirm." The latter song includes members of Elvis Costello & The Attractions, namely Elvis Costello on backing vocals, Bruce Thomas on bass and Pete Thomas on drums. Credited to "Nick Lowe and His Sound," the B-side of this single was Elvis & The Attractions' version of the Lowe-penned " (What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love & Understanding?" Mickey Jupp
Michael Graham "Mickey" Jupp (born 6 March 1944, in Worthing, Sussex, England) is an English musician and songwriter, mainly associated with the Southend music scene. Career Jupp played in several Southend bands after leaving art college in 1962 and was in the R&B group the Orioles (1963 to late 1965), which included Mo Witham (guitar, vocals) and Bob Clouter (drums), but the band were never recorded. After a break from music, Jupp formed Legend in 1968, who were signed to Bell Records. They released an eponymous album ''Legend'', playing a mix of pop, rockabilly and blues rock styles using no electric instruments. "Switchboard Susan" is a song written by Mickey Jupp and recorded by Nick Lowe for his 1979 album, ''Labour of Lust''. The song was produced by Lowe. Jupp originally wrote the song for his album ''Juppanese'', which Lowe was producing. Jupp disliked the backing track that Lowe's band Rockpile produced for the song, calling it "shit from top to bottom" according to Lowe. Lowe received Jupp's permission to take the song for himself. Ian Gomm
Ian Robert Gomm (born 28 March 1947 in Chiswick, West London) is a British singer-songwriter, who was the rhythm guitarist for Brinsley Schwarz from 1970 to 1974. He was named "Best Rhythm Guitarist" by ''NME'' in 1971. Early career Gomm's career began circa 1962/1963 in Unit 4, a group which evolved out of an outfit formed by Gomm on rhythm and lead guitar and vocals, Martin Davis on bass and Simon Behar on drums, all of whom were pupils at Ealing County School for Boys. Soon after this formation, Frank Kennington, who was older than the others, joined as lead vocalist, and they became Unit 4. "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding" is a 1974 song written by English singer/songwriter Nick Lowe. Initially released by Lowe with his band Brinsley Schwarz on their 1974 album '' The New Favourites of... Brinsley Schwarz'', the song was released as a single and did not chart. Peter Michael Thomas (born 9 August 1954) is an English rock drummer best known for his collaboration with singer Elvis Costello, both as a member of his band the Attractions and with Costello as a solo artist. Cruel To Be Kind
"Cruel to Be Kind" is a song by Nick Lowe, co-written by Lowe and his former Brinsley Schwarz bandmate Ian Gomm. Written by Lowe and Gomm while the pair were in Brinsley Schwarz, the song was saved on a demo until Columbia Records convinced Lowe to release it. Musically, the song was inspired by "The Love I Lost" by Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, an influence reflected in more recent performances of the song. Released as a single in 1979, the song peaked at number 12 in Australia, Canada, the UK and US charts.
