The Laboratoire de mécanique de Lille (LML) is a French research laboratory (UMR CNRS 8107) part of the Carnot institute ARTS. More than 200 people work in this laboratory which was created in 1985. It supports academic activities in the following graduate schools : * Arts et Métiers ParisTech (ENSAM) * École centrale de Lille * University of Lille. It supports doctoral researches and hosts PhD doctoral candidates in relationship with the European Doctoral College Lille Nord de France. Turbulence
In fluid dynamics, turbulence or turbulent flow is fluid motion characterized by chaotic changes in pressure and flow velocity. It is in contrast to a laminar flow, which occurs when a fluid flows in parallel layers, with no disruption between those layers. Turbulence is commonly observed in everyday phenomena such as surf, fast flowing rivers, billowing storm clouds, or smoke from a chimney, and most fluid flows occurring in nature or created in engineering applications are turbulent. Turbulence is caused by excessive kinetic energy in parts of a fluid flow, which overcomes the damping effect of the fluid's viscosity. The Office National d'Etudes et de Recherches Aérospatiales (ONERA) is the French national aerospace research centre. Marie-Joseph Kampé de Fériet (Paris, 14 May 1893 – Villeneuve d'Ascq, 6 April 1982) was professor at Université Lille Nord de France from 1919 to 1969. Boussinesq Approximation (water Waves)
In fluid dynamics, the Boussinesq approximation for water waves is an approximation valid for weakly non-linear and fairly long waves. The approximation is named after Joseph Boussinesq, who first derived them in response to the observation by John Scott Russell of the wave of translation (also known as solitary wave or soliton). The 1872 paper of Boussinesq introduces the equations now known as the Boussinesq equations. The Boussinesq approximation for water waves takes into account the vertical structure of the horizontal and vertical flow velocity.
