La Vega High School
La Vega High School is a public high school located in the city of Bellmead, Texas, United States and classified as a 4A school by the University Interscholastic League (UIL). It is a part of the La Vega Independent School District located in central McLennan County and also includes students from Waco. When the school opened, only white students were allowed to attend. In 1970, federally mandated integration caused African-American students from Carver High School to be rezoned to La Vega. In 2015, the school was rated " Met Standard" by the Texas Education Agency. George Washington Carver High School (Waco, Texas)
George Washington Carver High School was a public secondary school in the La Vega Independent School District in Waco, Texas. It served as the high school for black students from 1956 until the public schools were integrated in 1970. History From its founding in 1881, A.J. Moore was the only school for blacks in the Waco Metropolitan area. Carver was opened in 1956 on Dripping Springs Road as part of the La Vega Independent School District in 1956, although it would later become part of the Waco Independent School District. The initial enrollment was 500 in grades 1-12, but it quickly grew to 1,200 by 1962. In 1967 the band, under direction of Robert E. Lee won the grand prize at the Montreal World's Fair. Daxton "Dax" Swanson (born March 21, 1991) is an American football cornerback who is currently a free agent. He played college football at Sam Houston State. Swanson signed with the Indianapolis Colts as an undrafted free agent in 2013. Beasley Young Reece, Jr. (born March 18, 1954, in Waco, Texas) is a former American football defensive back in the National Football League for the Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He played college football at North Texas State University. Early years Reece attended La Vega High School, where he played as a cornerback. Julia Penny Clark is an American attorney who has argued employee benefits law cases before the United States Supreme Court.
