''La sirena varada'' is a Spanish play by Alejandro Casona written in 1934 during his stay in Valle de Arán. It is about a mermaid who falls in love with a man named Ricardo. It was released at Teatro Español in Madrid in the night of 17 March 1934, which was directed by Margarita Xirgu and Enrique Borrás and it got good reviews. Main characters were portrayed by Margarita Xirgu as Sirena, Enrique Borrás as Samy, Pedro López Lagar as Ricardo, Alberto Contreras as Don Florín, Fernando Aguirre Rodil as Fantasma and Enrique Guitart as Don Joaquín. Margarita Xirgu
Margarita Xirgu Subirá (18 June 1888, Molins de Rei, Barcelona, Spain – 25 April 1969, Montevideo, Uruguay), also Margarida Xirgu, was a Spanish stage actress, who was greatly popular throughout her country and Latin America. A friend of the poet Federico García Lorca, she was forced into exile during Francisco Franco's dictatorship of Spain, but continued her work in America. Notable plays in which she appeared include '' Como tú me Deseas'', ''La casa de Bernarda Alba'', and '' Mariana Pineda''. An opera, ''Ainadamar'', by the composer Osvaldo Golijov and playwright David Henry Hwang, based on Xirgu's life and her association with Lorca, was premiered in 2003. Pedro López Lagar (18 June 1899, in Madrid – 21 August 1977, in Buenos Aires) was a Spanish born Argentine film actor of the 1940s and 1950s. Although born in Madrid he moved to Argentina as a young man and began acting in film in 1938. Alejandro Rodríguez Álvarez, known as Alejandro Casona (3 March 1903 – 17 September 1965) was a Spanish poet and playwright born in Besullo, Spain, a member of the Generation of '27. Casona received his bachelor's degree in Gijon and later studied at the University of Murcia. After Franco's rise in 1936, he was forced, like many Spanish intellectuals, to leave Spain. He lived in Buenos Aires, Argentina until April 1962, when he definitively returned to Spain. Teatro Español ("Español or Spanish Theatre" – former Teatro del Príncipe and Corral del Príncipe) is a public theatre administered by the Government of Madrid, Spain.
