La Rochela Massacre
The La Rochela massacre occurred on January 18, 1989, at La Rochela, Simacota municipality, Colombia. 15 judicial officials, who were investigating crimes committed in the area, were rounded up and shot by a group of gunmen sent by Rodriguez Gacha. 12 of the officials were killed, while 3 survived. This was the first of the long series of terror attacks that shook Colombia in 1989, culminating with the November 27 bombing of Avianca Flight 203 and the December 6 DAS Building bombing in Bogotá. In November 1990, nine civilians and two army personnel were sentenced to jail for their role in the La Rochela massacre. In 2007, the State of Colombia was sentenced by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights to pay damages to the relatives of the 12 victims. The international tribunal ruled that the Colombian government had failed to investigate the complicity of state agents in the massacre. Semana
''Semana'' (Spanish: ''Week'') is a weekly magazine in Colombia. History ''Semana'' was founded in 1946 by Alberto Lleras Camargo (who would become president of Colombia in 1958) and that folded in 1961. It was relaunched by journalist Felipe López Caballero in 1983. Development , the person who restarted the magazine, took two earlier Colombian magazines as models. One was Camargo's ''Semana''; the other was '' :es:Alternativa'', a left-wing weekly published by Enrique Santos and Gabriel García Márquez. The foreign magazines that he strove to imitate were ''Time'' and ''Newsweek''. Recalling the prestige that had been enjoyed by Lleras's magazine, López asked for, and was given, permission to use the same name. The first issue came out on 12 May 12 1982. Avianca Flight 203
Avianca Flight 203 was a Colombian domestic passenger flight from El Dorado International Airport in Bogotá to Alfonso Bonilla Aragón International Airport in Cali, Colombia. It was destroyed by a bomb over the municipality of Soacha on November 27, 1989. All 107 people on board as well as 3 people on the ground were killed. The bombing had been ordered by the Medellín drug cartel. Aircraft and crew The aircraft was a Boeing 727-21 with registration number HK-1803, serial number 19035, and manufacturing serial number 272. It had been purchased from Pan Am. The aircraft was built in 1966, and had its maiden flight on May 19 of the same year. The aircraft was powered by three Pratt & Whitney JT8D-7 turbofan engines capable of developing up to of thrust each. The aircraft was delivered to Pan Am on May 28, and was registered as N326PA. DAS Building Bombing
The DAS Building bombing was a truck bomb attack in Bogotá, Colombia, at 7:30 am on December 6, 1989, targeting the Administrative Department of Security (DAS) headquarters. A truck parked near the building exploded, killing 57 people instantly and injuring 2,248. The bomb blast, an estimated 500 kg of dynamite, destroyed 14 city blocks and destroyed more than 300 commercial properties. The last victim of the bombing died on April 27 1990. It was the deadliest car bomb attack in Latin America before being succeeded by the AMIA bombing 5 years later. It is widely believed that the Medellín Cartel was responsible for the attack, in an attempt to assassinate DAS director Miguel Maza Márquez, who escaped unharmed. ''El Espectador'' (meaning "The Spectator") is a newspaper with national circulation within Colombia, founded by Fidel Cano Gutiérrez on 22 March 1887 in Medellín and published since 1915 in Bogotá. It changed from a daily to a weekly edition in 2001, following a financial crisis, and became a daily again on 11 May 2008, a comeback which had been long rumoured, in tabloid format (28 x 39.5 cm).
