La Quintana, also known as the Parque Biblioteca Tomás Carrasquilla (Tomás Carasquilla Library Park), is a culturally significant library park in Medellin, Colombia. Library Park (Colombia)
A library park ( es, parque biblioteca) is a term first used in Colombia for an urban complex formed by a combination of a library building with ample surrounding green space for public use. These library parks are strategically located in the periphery of Medellín, a major Colombian city, to address the need for more cultural and education space and public services in less affluent neighborhoods. According to the Mayor of Medellín, "The library parks are cultural centers for social development that encourage citizen encounters, educational and recreational activities, building groups, the approach to the new challenges in digital culture. And they are also spaces for cultural services that allow cultural creation and strengthening of existing neighborhood organizations." Ricardo La Rotta Caballero
Ricardo La Rotta Caballero is an architect in Bogotá, Colombia and the principal at the La Rotta Arquitectos firm. His work includes La Quintana Library, a library park named after Tomás Carrasquilla in Medellín, Colombia. Along with Architects Juan Manuel López and Ramón Quevedo, La Rotta was selected as an architect for an ecological redevelopment project north of Bogotá. In 2006, La Rotta's work on the project with Quevedo and López on Edifício Compensar in Bogotá which was selected as one of the 10 "projects of the year" by the publication ''Semana''. La Rotta was also involved in the project of the Plaza of Zipaquirá. La Rotta won a design competition for the neArts faculty buildingat Javeriana University. Tomás Carrasquilla
Tomás Carrasquilla Naranjo (1858 – 1940) was a Colombian writer who lived in the Antioquia region. He dedicated himself to very simple jobs: tailor, secretary of a judge, storekeeper in a mine, and worker at the Ministry of Public Works. He was an avid reader, and one of the most original Colombian literary writers, greatly influencing the younger generation of his time and later generations. Carrasquilla was little known in his time, according to Federico de Onís, a scholar of Carrasquilla's works. It was only after 1936, when he was already 78 years old, when he was awarded with the National Prize of Literature, that Carrasquilla got a national recognition. Tomás Carrasquilla Library Park is named in his honor. The Colombian civil wars of the second part of the 19th century prevented young Carrasquilla from continuing his studies at the University of Antioquia.
