La Quinta Formation
The La Quinta Formation is a Jurassic geologic formation which crops out in the Cordillera de Mérida and Serranía del Perijá of western Venezuela and northeastern Colombia. The formation is also present in the subsurface of the Cesar-Ranchería and Maracaibo Basins. At its type locality near La Grita, Táchira, it consists of a basal dacitic tuff followed by interlayered sandstones, tuffs, siltstones and rare limestones.Barret ''et al.'', 2008, p.164 Dinosaur remains including ''Laquintasaura'',Barret ''et al.'', 2014 '' Tachiraptor'', and '' Perijasaurus'' are among the fossils that have been recovered from the formation.Weishampel, ''et al.'' Táchira State ( es, Estado Táchira, ) is one of the 24 states of Venezuela. The state capital is San Cristóbal. Táchira State covers a total surface area of and as of the 2011 census, had a population of 1,168,908. At the end of the 19th century, Táchira State was where oil was discovered in Venezuela. Currently, its main economic revenues come from the production of coffee and pineapple. The cattle and agricultural activities play an important role in Táchira's economy. La Grita
La Grita is a town in the north west of Táchira state, Venezuela. It has a population of 80.000. Located in an Andean valley, La Grita has a beautiful natural setting and fertile land. Perijasaurus
''Perijasaurus'' (meaning "Perija lizard") is a genus of basal eusauropod sauropod dinosaur from the " Girón-type redbeds" of the La Quinta Formation of Cesar Department, north-eastern Colombia. The type species is ''Perijasaurus lapaz''. It lived during the Toarcian-Aalenian boundary around 175 million years ago early to middle Jurassic period. Discovery and naming The holotype, UCMP 37689, is a broken dorsal vertebra, around tall and centimeters long. It was discovered on 27 March 1943 at the western flank of the Serranía del Perijá mountain range by the Tropical Oil Company and was sent to the fossil collection at the University of California, Berkeley. Starting in 1955, UCMP 37689 had been mentioned in the literature with no consensus developing over its affinities. ''Tachiraptor'' ("thief of Táchira") is a genus of carnivorous Theropoda, theropod dinosaurs found in the early Jurassic period La Quinta Formation of Venezuela. It includes one species, ''Tachiraptor admirabilis'', described from a fossilized tibia and ischium. They were small bipedal dinosaurs, with a deduced total body length of just over . They were likely generalist species, generalist predators, preying on smaller vertebrates like other dinosaurs or lizards. Laquintasaura
''Laquintasaura'' is a genus of Venezuelan Ornithischia, ornithischian dinosaur containing only the type species ''Laquintasaura venezuelae''. The species was the first dinosaur to have been identified from Venezuela. It is known from extensive remains, all from a singular bonebed locality which has been sampled for specimen blocks over the course of several expeditions, largely led by Marcelo R Sánchez-Villagra.
