La Passione Di Gesù Cristo (Salieri)
''La passione di Gesù Cristo'' is an oratorio by composer Antonio Salieri that uses a libretto by Metastasio. While many composer's set music to this libretto, Metastasio is recorded to have said before Joseph II, Holy Roman Emperor that Salieri's setting "was the most expressive of any written on this poem." The work premiered in Vienna, Austria during the advent season of 1776. In 2004 Capriccio released a recording of the work by the Das Neue Orchester and Chorus Musicus Köln under conductor Christoph Spering with soloists Melba Ramos, Hanno Müller-Brachmann, Franziska Gottwald, and Florian Mock. Oratorio
An oratorio () is a large musical composition for orchestra, choir, and soloists. Like most operas, an oratorio includes the use of a choir, soloists, an instrumental ensemble, various distinguishable characters, and arias. However, opera is musical theatre, while oratorio is strictly a concert piece – though oratorios are sometimes staged as operas, and operas are sometimes presented in concert form. In an oratorio, the choir often plays a central role, and there is generally little or no interaction between the characters, and no props or elaborate costumes. A particularly important difference is in the typical subject matter of the text. Opera tends to deal with history and mythology, including age-old devices of romance, deception, and murder, whereas the plot of an oratorio often deals with sacred topics, making it appropriate for performance in the church. Hanno Müller-Brachmann (born 1970) is a German bass-baritone who made an international career in both opera and concert. A member of the Berlin State Opera from 1998 to 2011, he first sang Mozart roles such as The Magic Flute, Papageno and The Marriage of Figaro, Figaro, and created roles in premieres such as Mephistopheles in Dusapin's ''Faustus, the Last Night'' in 2006. Antonio Salieri (18 August 17507 May 1825) was an Italian classical composer, conductor, and teacher. He was born in Legnago, south of Verona, in the Republic of Venice, and spent his adult life and career as a subject of the Habsburg monarchy. Salieri was a pivotal figure in the development of late 18th-century opera. As a student of Florian Leopold Gassmann, and a protégé of Christoph Willibald Gluck, Salieri was a cosmopolitan composer who wrote operas in three languages. Salieri helped to develop and shape many of the features of operatic compositional vocabulary, and his music was a powerful influence on contemporary composers. Capriccio (record Label)
Capriccio is a formerly German, now Austrian, classical music record label. The original Capriccio label was founded in the 1980s and was until 2010 part of Delta-Music GmbH a German record company located in Großkönigsdorf, Frechen near Cologne, which was founded in 1970 by Philippe Sautot and Jürgen Moll. Following the bankruptcy of the Delta Music GMBH, the artistic director of Capriccio, Johannes Kernmayer, decided to carry on with several ongoing, but unfunded, recording projects from the profitable classical section of Delta as "Phoenix Edition." The releases on Phoenix Edition were commercially successful and enabled Kernmayer to rescue the classical back-catalogue of Capriccio and reestablish the Capriccio label as a new independent company in Vienna.
