La Mega Media, Inc., also known as La Mega Nota, is a chain of bilingual weekly newspapers, monthly magazines, and Spanish-language radio stations based in Columbus, Ohio, that serves Hispanic communities in several metropolitan areas of the United States such as Cleveland, Cincinnati, Columbus, Dayton, Pittsburgh and North Kentucky. KXOL-FM (96.3 MHz "Mega 96.3") is a commercial radio station in Los Angeles, California. It is owned by the Spanish Broadcasting System and airs a Spanish CHR radio format. KXOL-FM's studios and offices are on West Pico Boulevard. The transmitter is located in the Verdugo Mountains, near Glendale, California. KXOL-FM is also heard on a 14-watt booster station in Santa Clarita, KXOL-FM-1 at 96.3 MHz. History Early years The station first signed on as KRKD-FM, owned by Radio Broadcasters, Incorporated. It was the FM sister station to AM 1150 KRKD (now KEIB). Continental Telecasting Corporation bought the station in 1955, followed by Trans American Broadcasting Corporation in 1959. Two years later, Trans American sold the station to the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel as part of the consolidation of KRKD and its time share partner, KFSG, which both took turns broadcasting on 1150 kHz. WMEG (106.9 FM) is a radio station broadcasting a Top 40/CHR format. Licensed to Guayama, Puerto Rico, it serves the greater San Juan area. The station is currently owned by WMEG Licensing, Inc. Until 2004, La Mega 106.9 FM had an American Alternative Top 40 format. Music was 100% in English from Pop, Rock, Hip-Hop to Techno. In 2004 the station began to air Reggaeton music along with the original format. WSKQ-FM (97.9 MHz), known on-air as "La Mega 97.9", is a radio station licensed to New York City and is owned and operated by Spanish Broadcasting System (SBS). The station has a tropical format, which consists of such musical styles as salsa, merengue, bachata, and reggaeton. WSKQ-FM's transmitter is located at the Empire State Building. History On July 1, 1951, WEVD-FM began broadcasting on 107.5 MHz, simulcasting the programs of WEVD (1330 AM), owned by ''The Jewish Daily Forward''. Programming consisted of brokered ethnic programming, Jewish programming, and some pop standards and big band. Pursuant to a construction permit issued in May 1953, WEVD-FM moved to 97.9 MHz, and 107.5 went off the air. The transmitter was relocated to the Empire State Building in 1970. Norman B. WTKZ (1320 AM) is a radio station in Allentown, Pennsylvania. It is owned by VP Broadcasting LLC and broadcasts a Spanish-language contemporary hit radio format known as Mega 101.7. History AM 1320 began operation on March 8, 1947, as WKAP, a 1,000-watt daytimer at 1580 kHz. It was owned by Rahall Communications, with R.J. Rahall as president. In the 1950s, WKAP played middle of the road music with some softer songs by rock and roll artists. This format was known as MOR. Throughout the 1960s, WKAP had a Top 40 format, combined with relatively apolitical call-in shows. By 1970, the station evolved to more of an adult contemporary format.
