La Haute-Côte-Nord Regional County Municipality
La Haute-Côte-Nord is a regional county municipality in northeastern Quebec, Canada, in the Côte-Nord region. It is located on the Gulf of Saint Lawrence where the Saguenay River flows into it. The seat is Les Escoumins. The municipality has a land area of and its population was 10,846 inhabitants as of the 2016 census. Its largest community is the city of Forestville. Except for Sacré-Coeur, which is located along the Saguenay River, all places and municipalities of the RCM are along Quebec Route 138 directly on the shores of the Saint Lawrence River. The unorganized territory of Lac-au-Brochet makes up some 83% of the interior part of the RCM. The term regional county municipality or RCM (''french: municipalité régionale de comté, MRC'') is used in Quebec, Canada to refer to one of 87 county-like political entities. In some older English translations they were called county regional municipality. Regional county municipalities are a supralocal type of regional municipality, and act as the local municipality in Unorganized area#Quebec, unorganized territories within their borders. The system of regional county municipalities was introduced beginning in 1979 to replace the List of former counties of Quebec, historic counties of Quebec. In most cases, the territory of an RCM corresponds to that of a Census geographic units of Canada, census division; however, there are a few exceptions. The St. Lawrence River (french: Fleuve Saint-Laurent, ) is a large river in the middle latitudes of North America. Rivière-du-Loup is a regional county municipality in the Bas-Saint-Laurent region of Quebec, Canada. Its most important city is Rivière-du-Loup, which contains more than half of the population. This is a list of the regional county municipalities (RCM or MRC) and equivalent territories (TE) in the province of Quebec, Canada. They are given along with their geographical codes as specified by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs, Regions and Land Occupancy, and the administrative regions to which they belong. RCMs are county-like units of government at the supralocal level. However, not all municipalities belong to an RCM. In order to use RCMs for statistical purposes, some municipalities (mostly Indian reserves) are viewed as belonging to RCMs they do not belong to legally. The possibly enlarged RCMs are called ''municipalités régionales de comté géographiques'' (MRCG) as opposed to the legal ones known as ''municipalités régionales de comté juridiques'' (MRCJ). Essipit, Quebec
Essipit (known as Les Escoumins until 1996) is an Innu Indian reserve in the Canadian province of Quebec, located on the north shore of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence in the Côte-Nord region. It belongs to the Innue Essipit First Nation. The reserve is named after the historical name of the Escoumins River, that around 1664, was known as ''Esseigiou''. Charles Arnaud, who spent many years of his life among the Montagnais stated that the river was also called ''Etshipi'', meaning "river of shells". History The Montagnais have frequented the place for thousands of years, gathering berries that covered the rocks and adorned the mossy plains in the spring. The Jesuit Relations reported on the presence of "Excomminquois" in the region since 1611. Tadoussac, Quebec
Tadoussac () is a village in Quebec, Canada, at the confluence of the Saguenay and Saint Lawrence rivers. The indigenous Innu call the place ''Totouskak'' (plural for ''totouswk'' or ''totochak'') meaning "bosom", probably in reference to the two round and sandy hills located on the west side of the village. According to other interpretations, it could also mean "place of lobsters", or "place where the ice is broken" (from the Innu ''shashuko''). Although located in Innu territory, the post was also frequented by the Mi'kmaq people in the second half of the 16th century, who called it ''Gtatosag'' ("among the rocks"). Longue-Rive, Quebec
Longue-Rive is a municipality in the Côte-Nord region of the province of Quebec in Canada. The municipality includes the communities of Sault-au-Mouton, Baie-des-Bacon, Pointe-à-Boisvert, Rivière-Éperlan and Saint-Paul-du-Nord. History On May 7, 1997, the Village Municipality of Sault-au-Mouton and the Municipality of Saint-Paul-du-Nord were merged into the new Municipality of Saint-Paul-du-Nord–Sault-au-Mouton. The municipal council had 12 months to request for a name change, in consultation with its population. The new name Longue-Rive was chosen out of a list of 10 options through a referendum on May 26, 1998, and approved by the government on September 22, 1998. Les Bergeronnes, Quebec
Les Bergeronnes is a municipality in the Côte-Nord region of the province of Quebec in Canada. The municipality includes the communities of Grandes-Bergeronnes, Petites-Bergeronnes and Bon-Désir. The Bon-Désir trading post After the continental glacier withdrawal 8,000 years ago, Indigenous Canadians spent the summer along the Saint Lawrence River bank in the Bergeronnes territory. Archeological excavations found several layers of whale and seal skinning tools.
