''La Doña'' is the eleventh album by Teena Marie, released on May 11, 2004 on the Cash Money label. The album includes guest contributions from Rick James ("I Got You" - this was the last recording James made before his death), Gerald Levert ("A Rose by Any Other Name"), Common ("Revelations 3:8 Introduction"), Birdman ("Off the Chain"), MC Lyte ("The Mackin' Game") and Marie's daughter, Alia Rose. The album peaked at #6 on the ''Billboard'' 200, Marie's highest placing (and first top 20 entry) on that chart. It also reached #3 on the R&B Albums chart. The lead-off single "Still in Love" (which samples Al Green's 1972 track "What a Wonderful Thing Love Is") was Marie's first Top 30 hit on the US Hot R&B Singles chart for 14 years, peaking at #23. It was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2005 in the category Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. Teena Marie
Mary Christine Brockert (March 5, 1956 – December 26, 2010), known professionally as Teena Marie, was an American singer-songwriter, musician, composer, arranger, and producer. She was known by her childhood nickname Tina before taking the stage name Teena Marie and later acquired the nickname Lady T, given to her by her collaborator and friend, Rick James. She was known for her distinctive soprano vocals, which caused many listeners to believe she was black. Her success in R&B and soul music, and loyalty to these genres would earn her the title Ivory Queen of Soul. She played rhythm guitar, keyboards, and congas. Teena Marie was a three-time Grammy Award nominee. Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums is a music chart published weekly by '' Billboard'' magazine that ranks R&B and hip hop albums based on sales in the United States and is compiled by Nielsen SoundScan. The chart debuted as Hot R&B LPs in the issue dated January 30, 1965 in an effort by the magazine to further expand into the field of rhythm and blues music. It then went through several name changes, being known as Soul LPs in the 1970s and Top Black Albums in the 1980s, before returning to the R&B identification in 1990 and affixing a hip hop designation in 1999 to reflect the latter's growing sales and relationship to R&B during the decade. From 1965 through 2009, the chart was compiled based on reported sales at a core panel of stores with a "higher-than-average volume" of R&B and/or hip-hop album sales to monitor buying trends of the African-American community. ''Teena'' is a comic strip about a teenage girl, created by Hilda Terry. It ran from July 1, 1944, to 1963, distributed by King Features Syndicate. The strip evolved from Terry's earlier Sunday feature, ''It's a Girl's Life'', a collection of gag cartoons which first appeared in newspapers on Sunday, December 14, 1941. The format displayed six panels about the reactions of teenage girls to World War II. Comics historian Don Markstein noted: :They also could be marketed as a daily feature, but wartime paper shortages prevented that. The main characters were named Henny and Penny... Mannie Fresh
Byron Otto Thomas (born March 20, 1969), better known by his stage name Mannie Fresh, is an American music producer and rapper. He's best known for his productions on Cash Money Records releases, as well being half of the hip hop duo (alongside label co-founder Birdman) the Big Tymers. He produced all or most of the songs on 17 multi-platinum, platinum or gold albums for Cash Money from 1998 to 2004 before leaving the label. He also was their only in-house producer when the company started in 1991. Life and career Thomas was born and raised in the 7th Ward of New Orleans. Influenced by his father DJ Sabu, Thomas became a DJ for New Orleans hip hop crew New York Incorporated in 1984 at age 15. The Parkers
