La Danza (Gluck)
''La danza'' (''The Dance'') is an opera by the composer Christoph Willibald Gluck. The title page describes it as a ''componimento drammatico pastorale'' ("dramatic pastoral composition") in one act.Article by Julian Rushton in ''The Viking Opera Guide'', ed. Amanda Holden (Viking, 1993), p. 372. It was first performed at Laxenburg near Vienna on 5 May 1755. Performance history The opera was written to celebrate the eighth birthday of Empress Maria Theresa's son Leopold and first performed at Laxenburg on 5 May 1755. ''La danza'' was used as the prologue to ''Le grand Ballet des bergers'' (''The Great Ballet of the Shepherds''), a ballet with music by Josef Starzer. Pietro Metastasio had originally written the opera's Italian-language libretto for the composer Giuseppe Bonno in 1744. He revised the text for Gluck, including two new arias. The Teatro Comunale di Bologna is an opera house in Bologna, Italy. Typically, it presents eight operas with six performances during its November to April season. While there had been various theatres presenting opera in Bologna since the early 17th century, they had either fallen into disuse or burnt down. However, from the early 18th century, the ''Teatro Marsigli-Rossi'' had been presenting operatic works by popular composers of the day including Vivaldi, Gluck, and Niccolò Piccinni. The ''Teatro Malvezzi'', built in 1651, burned down in February 1745 and this event prompted the construction of a new public theatre, the ''Nuovo Teatro Pubblico'', as the Teatro Comunale was first called when it opened on 14 May 1763. Johann Joseph Friebert (4 December 1724 – 6 August 1799), also known as Giuseppe Fribert, was an Austrian opera singer and composer. Amongst his compositions were four singspiels, six operas, and several pieces of church music. As a singer, he was known for his lyrical tenor voice and sensitive interpretations.
