La Concha Renaissance San Juan Resort, also known as La Concha Resort, is a historic luxury resort located at the Condado (Santurce), Condado oceanfront within the district of Santurce, San Juan, Puerto Rico, Santurce in San Juan, Puerto Rico. History The La Concha Hotel opened in December 1958 during the ''Tropical Modernism Movement''. The hotel was publicly owned, by the government of Puerto Rico, and managed by the US-based Associated Federal Hotels chain. The main hotel building was designed by architects Osvaldo Toro and Miguel Ferrer, of the firm Toro Ferrer. The two men had previously designed the first modern luxury resort in San Juan, the Caribe Hilton. Another part of the complex, the seashell-inspired building for the restaurant ''La Pearl, Perla'', was designed by architect Mario Salvadori. La Concha Motel
The La Concha Motel was a motel that opened in 1961 and closed in 2004. It was designed by architect Paul Williams who was one of the first prominent African American architects in the United States and was also the architect who designed the first LAX theme building. It was located at 2955 Las Vegas Blvd South, on the Las Vegas Strip, in Winchester, Nevada, and was considered one of the best-preserved examples of 1950s Googie architecture. It is believed to be named after the Beach of La Concha in Spain. History The La Concha was opened by M.K. Doumani. When it opened, the La Concha was one of the larger properties on the Las Vegas Strip. Various celebrities had stayed at the motel, including Ronald Reagan, Ann-Margret, Flip Wilson, Muhammad Ali, and the Carpenters. The La Concha was featured in the 1995 film ''Casino''. The Beach of La Concha ( eu, Kontxa Hondartza ; es, Playa de La Concha , "cone shell beach") is a crescent shaped urban seaboard of the city of San Sebastián located at the ''Bay of La Concha'' in the Basque Country, in northern Spain. Its name ''“Concha”'' is given upon its remarkably regular shape. The scenic setting in the Bay of La Concha and the 19th century elegance of fashionable seaside resorts have made the site very popular, as it is frequently cited as one of the most beautiful and the most famous urban beaches in Europe. Conch () is a common name of a number of different medium-to-large-sized sea snails. Conch shells typically have a high spire and a noticeable siphonal canal (in other words, the shell comes to a noticeable point at both ends). In North America, a conch is often identified as a queen conch, indigenous to the waters of the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean. Queen conches are valued for seafood and are also used as fish bait.
