La Centrale
La Centrale galerie Powerhouse is an artist-run space in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, founded in 1973. For decades, it was known as the city's only feminist art gallery. History The idea for the gallery grew out of a Consciousness raising, consciousness-raising group that met on a routine basis at a crafts store, Flaming Apron, in the Notre-Dame-de-Grâce neighbourhood. The original founders were Elizabeth Bertoldi, Leslie Busch, Isobel Dowler-Gow, Margaret Griffin, Clara Gutshe, Billie-Joe Mericle, Stasje Plantenga and Pat Walsh. In 1973 it held its first show, in a rented space on Greene Avenue (Montreal), Greene Avenue. Dayna McLeod
Dayna McLeod (born 1972) is a Montreal based performance artist and video artist whose work often includes topics of feminism, queer identity, and sexuality. She has a Diploma in Sculpture from the Alberta College of Art and Design and an M.F.A. in Open Media from Concordia University. She is currently competing a Ph.D in Humanities at The Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies in Society and Culture at Concordia University. Career A regular performer at Montreal's Kiss My Cabaret, Meow Mix, Le Boudoir, and Edgy Women Festival, McLeod's work utilizes performance-based, remix and cabaret and practices. She has performed in ten annual editions of the Edgy Women Festival and her work has been shown internationally. One of her notable works was her "cougar for a year" project, in which she dressed in animal print from June 1, 2012, to June 1, 2013. Saint Laurent Boulevard, also known as Saint Lawrence Boulevard (officially in french: boulevard Saint-Laurent), is a major street in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Sainte-Catherine Street (french: rue Sainte-Catherine) () is the primary commercial artery of Downtown Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It crosses the central business district from west to east, beginning at the corner of Claremont Avenue and de Maisonneuve Boulevard in Westmount, and ending at the Grace Dart Extended Care Centre by Assomption metro station, where it folds back into Notre-Dame Street. Alanis Obomsawin, (born August 31, 1932) is an Abenaki American Canadian filmmaker, singer, artist, and activist primarily known for her documentary films. Born in New Hampshire, United States and raised primarily in Quebec, Canada, she has written and directed many National Film Board of Canada documentaries on First Nations issues. Obomsawin is a member of Film Fatales independent women filmmakers. Mirha-Soleil Ross
Mirha-Soleil Ross is a transgender videographer, performance artist, sex worker and activist. Her work since the early 1990s in Montreal and Toronto has focused on transsexual rights, access to resources, advocacy for sex workers and animal rights. Early life Ross grew up in a poor neighbourhood of Montreal, Quebec. As a teenager during the 1980s, she became aware of animal abuse. At that time, Ross became a vegetarian and involved with animal rights activism. She said that although people often ask her what it was like to try to pass as a woman, she struggled much more when she was trying to pass as a boy and was often attacked for looking too feminine. Ross moved from Montreal to Toronto during the early 1990s, where she was a sex worker and began producing zines and videos.
