La Carrera Panamericana
''La Carrera Panamericana'' is a 1992 video of the Carrera Panamericana automobile race in Mexico. The film was directed by Ian McArthur, and included a soundtrack entirely of music by the band Pink Floyd, as the band's guitarist David Gilmour, drummer Nick Mason and manager Steve O'Rourke competed in the race in 1991. The film had been broadcast on BBC2 on 24 December 1991. During the course of the race, Gilmour crashed, and while he was unharmed, Steve O'Rourke (his map-reader and Pink Floyd's manager) suffered a broken leg. Mason finished eighth overall with his co-driver, English auto racer Valentine Lindsay. Music The music is a combination of previously released Pink Floyd material (re-edited into a soundtrack) and material composed for the video. The tracks composed for the video are the first studio recordings made after Richard Wright re-joined the band in 1990. The Carrera Panamericana was a border-to-border sedan ( stock and touring and sports car) rally racing event on open roads in Mexico similar to the Mille Miglia and Targa Florio in Italy. Running for five consecutive years from 1950 to 1954, it was widely held by contemporaries to be the most dangerous race of any type in the world. It has since been resurrected along some of the original course as a classic speed rally. Original 1950 After the 2,178 mile (3,507 kilometer) north-south Mexican section of the Pan-American Highway was completed in 1950, a nine-stage, five-day race across the country was organized by the national government to celebrate its achievement and attract international business. Steve O'Rourke
Steve O'Rourke ( – ) was an English music manager and racing driver. He is known for being the manager of Pink Floyd, a position he held from 1968 until his death. Among his accomplishments is negotiating Pink Floyd's split with bass player and main songwriter Roger Waters. Life and Pink Floyd manager O'Rourke's father, Tommy O'Rourke, was a fisherman on the Aran Islands off the West of Ireland. He travelled to London for the premiere of the Robert Flaherty documentary film, ''Man of Aran'', in which he appeared as a shark hunter. He settled in London, where Steve was born in the suburb of Willesden. O'Rourke trained as an accountant and went to work with Bryan Morrison Agency, which became a part of NEMS Enterprises, as a junior agent and book keeper. Signs Of Life (instrumental)
"Signs of Life" is the opening track on ''A Momentary Lapse of Reason'', the first Pink Floyd album headed by David Gilmour, in the absence of ex-member Roger Waters. Music It is an instrumental piece, the only words being the electronically processed voice of drummer Nick Mason, who can briefly be heard reciting two verses of an unknown poem. To open the track, producer Bob Ezrin recorded the sound of David Gilmour's boatman, Langley Iddins, rowing across the Thames. The screen film used to accompany the piece during concert performances featured Iddins rowing through Grantchester Meadows. The track is Pink Floyd's first instrumental piece (excluding the live-only " The Last Few Bricks") since 1973's "Any Colour You Like", from ''The Dark Side of the Moon''.
