La Belle is a city in western Lewis County, Missouri, United States. The population was 664 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Quincy, IL–MO Micropolitan Statistical Area. History A post office called La Belle has been in operation since 1856. The first permanent settlement at La Belle was made in 1857, and the town site platted in 1871. La Belle is derived from the French meaning "the beautiful", and the settlement was so named from its scenic setting. La Belle, New Mexico
La Belle (also known as Labelle) is a ghost town in Taos County, New Mexico, United States. It is located approximately eight miles northeast of Red River. History Minerals had been discovered in the area in 1866, but settlement did not occur until several decades later. The town was established as a mining camp and named after Belle Dixon, the wife of a prospector who was one of the first investors in the area, on August 28, 1894. By December, La Belle boasted 80 buildings, including three saloons, a hotel, a restaurant, a mercantile store, and butcher, blacksmith, and feed shops. In March 1895, the population reached 700 inhabitants, and there was a demand for a schoolhouse, which was completed by July. The ''La Belle Cresset'' newspaper was published in the town. La Belle, also known as LaBelle, is an unincorporated community on Taylor Bayou and FM 365, approximately twelve miles south of Beaumont, in central Jefferson County, Texas, United States. It is part of the Beaumont– Port Arthur Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Although officially recognized settlers had lived in the Taylor Bayou area since the 1830s, a post office was not established at the community known as Lower Taylor's Bayou until 1888. Marshall County is a county in the U.S. state of South Dakota. As of the 2020 census, the population was 4,306. Its county seat is Britton. The county was created on May 2, 1885, and was named for Marshall Vincent, who homesteaded near Andover, South Dakota. Geography Marshall County lies on the north side of South Dakota. Its north boundary line abuts the south boundary line of the state of North Dakota. Its terrain consists of rolling hills, with numerous lakes and ponds in the SE portion. ''La Belle Jardinière'', also known as the ''Madonna and Child with Saint John the Baptist'', is a painting started by the Italian High Renaissance artist Raphael, and finished by Ridolfo del Ghirlandaio, that depicts the Madonna, a young Christ, and a young John the Baptist. It is believed to have been commissioned by the Sienese patrician Fabrizio Sergardi in approximately 1507. It is currently displayed in the Louvre Museum in Paris, France. On 5 April 1986, three people were killed and 229 injured when ''La Belle'' discothèque was bombed in the Friedenau district of West Berlin. "La Belle Dame sans Merci" ("The Beautiful Lady Without Mercy") is a ballad produced by the England, English poet John Keats in 1819. The title was derived from the title of a 15th-century poem by Alain Chartier called ''La Belle Dame sans Mercy''. ''La Belle'' was one of Robert de La Salle's four ships when he explored the Gulf of Mexico with the ill-fated mission of starting a French colony at the mouth of the Mississippi River in 1685. ''La Belle'' was wrecked in present-day Matagorda Bay the following year, dooming La Salle's Texas colony to failure. The wreckage of ''La Belle'' lay forgotten until it was discovered by a team of state archaeologists in 1995.
