The London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) pioneered the use of diesel shunting locomotives in Great Britain. The variety of experimental and production diesel shunters produced by the LMS is summarised below. 5519 renumbered ZM9 This was an 0-4-0 diesel mechananical shunting locomotive built by Hudswell Clarke for the Crewe Works Narrow-gauge railway in 1930. It was the first diesel locomotive supplied to a major UK railway. It had a McLaren-Benz 2-cylinder engine of 20 hp at 800 rpm. It was transferred to Horwich Works in 1935. It was renumbered ZM9 by British Railways and survived until 1957. 1831 This was the first experimental, standard-gauge shunter, nominally rebuilt from a Midland Railway steam locomotive in 1932 (originally built in September 1892 by the Vulcan Foundry). LMS diesel shunter 7052 was an experimental 0-6-0 diesel-mechanical shunting locomotive, introduced by the London Midland and Scottish Railway (LMSR) in 1934 and which remained in service with that railway for six years. It was later acquired for military use until 1966. History No. 7052 locomotive was an experimental locomotive built by the Hunslet Engine Company at their Leeds works in 1934. It carried an original number of 7402 only within the works and was delivered as LMSR as number 7052. For six years it was used for shunting at Leeds before being loaned to the Air Ministry in 1940. It was loaned to the War Department between 1940 and 1942, which numbered it 24. It was withdrawn from LMS stock in December 1943 and sold for use at RNAD Broughton Moor, near Maryport, for which use it was flameproofed by Hunslet. Under the Whyte notation for the classification of steam locomotives, represents the wheel arrangement of no leading wheels, six powered and coupled driving wheels on three axles and no trailing wheels. This was the most common wheel arrangement used on both tender and tank locomotives in versions with both inside and outside cylinders. In the United Kingdom, the Whyte notation of wheel arrangement was also often used for the classification of electric and diesel-electric locomotives with side-rod coupled driving wheels. The Great Western Railway purchased two diesel shunters, and ordered a further seven immediately prior to Nationalisation, which were delivered to British Rail in 1948–49. The two shunters used by the GWR were numbered 1 and 2, while a series commencing at 501 was planned for the new locomotives ordered in the 1940s. British Rail numbered 2 and the new locomotives in a series commencing at 15100. 1 This locomotive was built by Fowler in 1933 and was used at Swindon Works. The Great Western Railway (GWR) was a British railway company that linked London with the southwest, west and West Midlands of England and most of Wales. It was founded in 1833, received its enabling Act of Parliament on 31 August 1835 and ran its first trains in 1838 with the initial route completed between London and Bristol in 1841. Total Operations Processing System (TOPS) is a computer system for managing railway locomotives and rolling stock, known for many years of use in the United Kingdom. TOPS was originally developed between the Southern Pacific Railroad (SP), Stanford University and IBM as a replacement for paper-based systems for managing rail logistics. A jointly-owned consultancy company, ''TOPS On-Line Inc.'', was established in 1960 with the goal of implementing TOPS, as well as selling it to third parties. Development was protracted, requiring around 660 man-years of effort to produce a releasable build. During mid-1968, the first phase of the system was introduced on the SP, and quickly proved its advantages over the traditional methods practiced prior to its availability. The British Rail Class 11 was applied to a batch of diesel shunting locomotives built from April 1945 to December 1952, based on a similar earlier batch built by the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) between 1934 and 1936. Overview Numbering An initial batch of twenty locomotives was built during World War II, fourteen of which were built for the War Department, with the first ten of these (70260-70269) subsequently going to the Nederlandse Spoorwegen post-war as NS 501–510. LMS numbers 7120–7126 went straight into LMS stock, and a follow-up batch was built, 7129 being the last diesel shunter to be built for the LMS. British Rail Class D3/7
The British Railways Class D3/7 is a class of 0-6-0 diesel electric shunting locomotives built as LMS Nos. 7080–7119. The class were built from May 1939 through to July 1942 by the London, Midland and Scottish Railway at their Derby Works using a diesel electric transmission supplied by English Electric. They are a modified version of the 1934-vintage Class D3/6 (LMS 7069-7079) diesel shunters based on the English Electric 6K diesel engine of , but have jackshaft transmission necessitating a significant increase in body length. The D3/6 had two axle-hung traction motors instead, and this feature became commonplace in more modern designs built after World War II. The British Rail Class D3/6 were diesel shunters designed in 1934/5 by English Electric for the London, Midland and Scottish Railway. (LMS) Prototype Between 1931 and 1934, the LMS ordered nine prototype 0-6-0 diesel shunters of different designs. The last of these was based on the English Electric 6K of diesel engine, with a long bonnet ("nose"), 0-6-0 wheel arrangement, EE 6K prime mover and two axle-hung traction motors. It was built by Hawthorne Leslie to English Electric design. Sir W G Armstrong Whitworth & Co Ltd was a major British manufacturing company of the early years of the 20th century. With headquarters in Elswick, Newcastle upon Tyne, Armstrong Whitworth built armaments, ships, locomotives, automobiles and aircraft. LMS Diesel Shunter 7058
LMS diesel shunter 7058 was based on an earlier Armstrong Whitworth prototype of 1932, which had been tested by the London, Midland and Scottish Railway. It was initially numbered 7408 and then re-numbered 7058. War Department use It was loaned to the War Department between 1941 and 1943 for use at the Longmoor Military Railway, but, despite the extensive period of time spent on loan, no WD number was allocated. Post-war use It passed to British Railways upon nationalisation in January 1948, which allocated it number 13000. However, it was withdrawn in November 1949 (and scrapped shortly afterwards) before the number had been applied. The number 13000 was then used instead for the first of the Class 08 shunters. LMS Diesel Shunter 7057
LMS diesel shunter 7057, later to become NCC Class 22, was built by Harland & Wolff. Testing started in July 1934 and the locomotive was taken into LMS stock in February 1935. It was loaned to the War Department between 1941-1943, which numbered it 233. It was withdrawn from LMS stock in January 1944 and sold back to Harland & Wolff, which rebuilt it with a new 225 hp (168 kW) engine and converted it to the gauge. It was then sold to the Northern Counties Committee, which numbered it 22. It was finally withdrawn in April 1965 and scrapped at the close of that year.
