Lietuvos krepšinio lyga (LKL) (''English'': Lithuanian Basketball League), also known as Betsafe LKL for sponsorship reasons, is the premier professional men's club basketball league in Lithuania. It is composed of 12 teams, and it is a member of the Lithuanian Basketball Federation. The best LKL clubs are also annual participants of the top European-wide basketball competitions, including European professional club basketball system, the top-tier level EuroLeague. On April 22, 1993, the Lietuvos krepšinio asociacija (''English'': Lithuanian Basketball Association) (LKA) was founded. It was the first professional sports organisation in Lithuania. Lietuvos krepšinio lyga was built on the foundation of the LKA. Former basketball player Šarūnas Marčiulionis is named as the founder of the league. Jonas Mačiulis (born 10 February 1985) is a Lithuanian former professional basketball player. Standing at , he mainly plays at the small forward position. As a member of the senior Lithuanian national team, he earned an All-EuroBasket Team selection in 2015, as Lithuania won the silver medal. Early years Mačiulis spent two years competing in the LKAL, the Lithuanian League 2nd Division. He won the 2003 2nd Division title with LKKA-Žalgiris of Kaunas. Professional career Mačiulis made his pro debut in 2004, with the Lithuanian League team Nevėžis. He averaged 13.6 points and 5.8 rebounds per game in his only season with the team. The format was slightly different from the previous contests: LKL teams were geographically divided into an eastern division and a western division. Darjuš Lavrinovič ( pl, Dariusz Ławrynowicz, born 1 November 1979) is a Lithuanian professional basketball player for the BC Vytis of the National Basketball League. He is 2.12m (6' 11½") in height. Jonas Valančiūnas ( ; ; born 6 May 1992) is a Lithuanian professional basketball player for the New Orleans Pelicans of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He was selected by the Toronto Raptors with the fifth overall pick in the 2011 NBA draft. At the 2019 trade deadline, he was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies. BC Šiauliai ( lt, Krepšinio klubas Šiauliai) is the professional basketball club of Šiauliai, Lithuania. The club competes in the Lithuanian Basketball League. Mindaugas Kuzminskas (born 19 October 1989) is a Lithuanian professional basketball player for Pınar Karşıyaka of the Basketbol Süper Ligi (BSL). He also represents the Lithuanian national team.
