LGBT Rights In Paraguay
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) persons in Paraguay face legal challenges not experienced by non-LGBT residents. Both male and female same-sex sexual activity are legal in Paraguay, but same-sex couples and households headed by same-sex couples are not eligible for all of the same legal protections available to opposite-sex married couples. Paraguay remains one of the few conservative countries in South America regarding LGBT rights. In January 2018, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR) ruled that the American Convention on Human Rights mandates and requires the recognition of same-sex marriage. The ruling was fully binding on Costa Rica and sets a binding precedent for other Latin American and Caribbean countries including Paraguay. There is currently a pending lawsuit to recognize same-sex marriage that relies on the IACHR ruling. Paraguay's bicameral Congress ''(Congreso)'' consists of a 45-member Senate and an 80-member Chamber of Deputies. It serves as the legislative branch of the Paraguayan state. Yren Rotela
Yren Ailyn Rotela Ramirez (born 9 January 1981) is a Paraguayan activist for the rights of LGBT people and sex workers. Biography Yren Rotela was born on 9 January 1981 in the Obrero neighborhood of Asunción, Paraguay. She is the second of seven siblings. She came out as a trans woman at age 14, after which she was expelled from school. Professional career In 1999, an instance of police repression against sex workers prompted Rotela to dedicate herself to activism, publicly denouncing the abuses and extortion that affect this community. As a sex worker, she began to organize with her colleagues, and in 2007 she co-founded Panambí: Association of Transvestite, Transsexual, and Transgender People, which adopted its charter in 2008 and obtained legal status in 2009. Gender-affirming surgery (GAS) is a surgical procedure, or series of procedures, that alters a transgender or transsexual person's physical appearance and sexual characteristics to resemble those associated with their identified gender, and alleviate gender dysphoria. The term is also sometimes used to describe surgical intervention for intersex people. It is also known as sex reassignment surgery (SRS), gender confirmation surgery (GCS), and several other names. María Gloria Bobadilla
María Gloria Bobadilla Granada is a Paraguayan lawyer. She is president of the Paraguayan Association of Female Lawyers (ADAP). Career In 1993 María Gloria Bobadilla brought a case before the Paraguayan Civil Court on behalf of a Paraguayan living in Italy, Ramón Fidel, who had undergone gender reassignment surgery and wanted to be officially registered as a woman and not as a man. Fidel died in a traffic accident before the case could be decided. In 2008, Bobadilla called for the law to be clarified: In 2015 Bobadilla called for the consideration of new measures, including ankle monitors and chemical castration, to combat rape and other sexual crimes in Paraguay. Gender identity is the personal sense of one's own gender. Gender identity can correlate with a person's assigned sex or can differ from it. In most individuals, the various biological determinants of sex are congruent, and consistent with the individual's gender identity. Mario Abdo Benítez (; born 10 November 1971) is a Paraguayan politician who has served as the president of Paraguay since 2018. He was previously a senator and President of the Senate. Early life and education Abdo Benítez was born in Asunción on 10 November 1971 and is the son of Ruth Benítez Perrier and Mario Abdo Benítez Sr. His father's ancestry is Lebanese.
