L. O. Wenckebach
Ludwig Oswald Wenckebach (16 June 1895, in Heerlen – 3 November 1962, in Noordwijkerhout) was a Dutch sculptor, painter, and medallist. He was the son of the anatomist Karel Frederik Wenckebach and nephew and pupil of the graphic designer and painter Willem Wenckebach. He started as a painter, but in 1920 switched to sculpting. He is best known for his many war monuments and designing the coins issued in the Netherlands between 1948 and 1980. Heerlen
Heerlen (; li, Heële ) is a city and a municipality in the southeast of the Netherlands. It is the third largest settlement proper in the province of Limburg. Measured as municipality, it is the fourth municipality in the province of Limburg. Heerlen forms part of the city-region of Parkstad Limburg, an agglomeration with about 250,000 inhabitants and encompassing 8 municipalities. It is to the east of Maastricht and north of the German city of Aachen. After its early Roman beginnings and a modest medieval period, Heerlen became a centre for the coal mining industry in the Netherlands in the late 19th century. Noordwijkerhout
Noordwijkerhout () is a town and former municipality in the western part of the Netherlands, in the province of South Holland. The town is currently part of the municipality of Noordwijk and lies in the bulb-growing region (the Duin- en Bollenstreek) of the Netherlands, which is famed for its tulips. The former municipality of Noordwijkerhout covered an area of , of which was water, and had a population of in . Karel Frederik Wenckebach
Karel Frederik Wenckebach (; March 24, 1864 – November 11, 1940) was a Dutch anatomist who was a native of the Hague. He studied medicine in Utrecht, and in 1901 become a professor of medicine at the University of Groningen. Later he was a professor at the Universities of Strasbourg (1911–14) and Vienna (1914–29). Contributions in cardiology Wenckebach is primarily remembered for his work in cardiology. In 1899 he provided a description of irregular pulses due to partial blockage of atrioventricular conduction, creating a progressive lengthening of conduction time in cardiac tissue. The condition was referred to as a "second degree AV block" and later named the "Wenckebach phenomenon" and reclassified as Mobitz type I block in Mobitz's 1924 paper. A similar phenomenon can also occur in the sinoatrial node where it gives rise to type I second degree SA block, and this is also known as a Wenckebach block; the two have distinct features on an ECG however. Anton Philips
Anton Frederik Philips (14 March 1874 – 7 October 1951) co-founded Royal Philips Electronics N.V. in 1912 with his older brother Gerard Philips in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. His father and Gerard had founded the Philips Company in 1891 as a family business. Anton Philips served as CEO of the company from 1922 to 1939. Early life and education Born to a Dutch family of Jewish heritage, Anton was the second son to Maria Heyligers (1836 – 1921) and Benjamin Frederik David Philips (1 December 1830 – 12 June 1900).
