L. H. Evers
Leonard Herbert Evers (25 May 1926-18 February 1985) was an Australian novelist and writer for children who was born in Brisbane, Queensland. After dropping out of high school at age fourteen, Len Evers joined the Australian Imperial Force during World War II and later served with the Occupation Force in Japan. Following the war he trained as a teacher and later attained an Arts Degree from Sydney University and a Diploma in Psychology. He left teaching in 1960 to become a psychologist in the NSW prison service. He wrote four novels for adults and was awarded the Children's Book of the Year Award: Older Readers for his work ''The Racketty Street Gang'' in 1962. Len Evers died in 1985. The Racketty Street Gang
''The Racketty Street Gang '' (1961) is a novel for children by Australian author L. H. Evers. It was joint winner of the Children's Book of the Year Award: Older Readers in 1962. Plot outline The novel is set in an old Sydney harbour suburb and follows the exploits of a group of young buys who attempt to clear the name of the father of one of them from a war disgrace. Critical reception In a round-up of books of the time a reviewer in ''The Canberra Times'' in 1961 called the book "a remarkably good yarn". They went on to say: "The author obviously knows these parts well, and his perceptive comments give life and depth to this story...Boys and girls are almost bound to enjoy this story, which I hope finds its way into the list of books for consideration for the 1961 Book of the Year Award." George Worsley Adamson
George Worsley Adamson, RE, MCSD (7 February 1913 – 5 March 2005) was a book illustrator, writer, and cartoonist, who held American and British dual citizenship from 1931. Early life Adamson was born in the Bronx, New York City. His parents were George William Adamson, a master car builder for the Interborough Rapid Transit Company, and Mary Lydia (Lily, née Howard). His father, born in Glasgow, Scotland, and his mother, born in Wigan, Lancashire, had moved to New York City from Bombay in 1910. Following the death of his mother in February 1921, George Adamson sailed to England with his father, his Aunt Florence, and his two sisters, Marie and Dorothy, on the Cunard liner RMS ''Caronia'', landing at Liverpool on July 10. His father sailed back to New York in October 1921, where he died the following year.
