L'Hirondelle Et La Mésange
''L'Hirondelle et la Mésange'' ("the swallow and the titmouse") is a French drama film directed by André Antoine, filmed in 1920 but not released. A reconstruction was made and screened in 1984. Plot Pierre van Groot is skipper of two barges, ''L'Hirondelle'' and ''La Mésange'', on which he transports building materials along the waterways of Belgium and northern France for areas devastated by the First World War. He is accompanied by his wife Griet and her younger sister Marthe, and they supplement their income with some private smuggling across the French border. In Antwerp Pierre hires a capable new mate, Michel. During their voyage, Michel ingratiates himself with the family and courts Marthe, while masking his plan to discover the hiding-place of some contraband diamonds. When Pierre catches Michel in the act of stealing the diamonds, he exacts a ruthless punishment that will protect the family secret. André Antoine
André Antoine (31 January 185823 October 1943) was a French actor, theatre manager, film director, author, and critic who is considered the father of modern mise en scène in France. Biography André Antoine was a clerk at the Paris Gas Utility and worked in the Archer Theatre when he asked to produce a dramatization of a novel by Émile Zola. The amateur group refused it, so he decided to create his own theatre to realize his vision of the proper development of dramatic art. Antoine founded the Théâtre Libre in Paris in 1887. This was a ''théâtre d'essai'', a workshop theatre, where plays were produced whether they would perform at the box office or not. Bertrand Tavernier (25 April 1941 – 25 March 2021) was a French director, screenwriter, actor and producer. Life and career Tavernier was born in Lyon, France, the son of Geneviève (née Dumond) and René Tavernier, a publicist and writer, several years president of the French PEN club. He said his father's publishing of a wartime resistance journal and aid to anti-Nazi intellectuals shaped his moral outlook as an artist. According to Tavernier, his father believed that words were "as important and as lethal as bullets". Tavernier wanted to become a filmmaker from the age of 13 or 14 years. He said that his cinematic influences included filmmakers John Ford, William Wellman, Jean Renoir, Jean Vigo and Jacques Becker. Tavernier was influenced by the 1968 general strike in France. Henri Colpi (; 15 July 1921 – 14 January 2006) was a French film editor and film director. Early life Colpi graduated from the IDHEC in 1947. During 1950 to 1960, he edited films for such notable French New Wave directors as Agnès Varda and Georges Franju. Career Colpi directed the 1961 film ''Une aussi longue absence'', which is well known for sharing the Palme d'Or at the 1961 Cannes Film Festival with ''Viridiana'', directed by Luis Buñuel. ''Une aussi longue absence'' was written by Marguerite Duras, featured Alida Valli in a major role, and included music by Georges Delerue. It also won the Louis Delluc Prize in 1960. His second feature ''Codine'' was also screening in competition at the 1963 Cannes Film Festival, where Colpi won the prize for Best Screenplay. Pierre Alcover (14 March 1893 – 14 November 1957) was a French stage and film actor. He starred in 40 films between 1918 and 1943. In 1920 he starred in the film ''Champi-Tortu''. The Cinémathèque Française (), founded in 1936, is a French non-profit film organization that holds one of the largest archives of film documents and film-related objects in the world. Based in Paris's 12th arrondissement, the archive offers daily screenings of worldwide films. History The collection emerged from the efforts of Henri Langlois and Lotte H. Eisner in the mid 1930s to collect and screen films. Langlois had acquired one of the largest collections in the world by the beginning of World War II, only to have it nearly wiped out by the German authorities in occupied France, who ordered the destruction of all films made prior to 1937. He and his friends smuggled huge numbers of documents and films out of occupied France to protect them until the end of the war.
