Kārlis Irbītis
Kārlis Irbītis (October 14, 1904, in Limbaži municipality, Lāde parish, Governorate of Livonia – October 13, 1997, in Saint-Laurent (borough), Saint-Laurent, Quebec, Canada) was a Latvian aeroplane designer. His greatest successes, for the VEF Factory, were the sports plane VEF I-12 (1935) and the monoplane VEF I-16 (1939), used as a fighter. After World War II, when he had emigrated to Canada, he was the designer of the experimental Canadian VTOL, vertical landing and take-off aeroplane, the CL-84 (1950). Limbaži Municipality ( lv, Limbažu novads) is a municipality in Vidzeme, Latvia. The municipality was formed in 2009 by merging Katvari Parish, Limbaži Parish, Pāle Parish, Skulte Parish, Umurga Parish, Vidriži Parish, Viļķene Parish and Limbaži town, the administrative centre being Limbaži. On 1 July 2021, Limbaži Municipality was enlarged when Aloja Municipality and Salacgrīva Municipality were merged into it. Shvetsov M-11
The Shvetsov M-11 is a five-cylinder air-cooled radial aircraft engine produced in the Soviet Union between 1923 and 1952.Gunston 1989, p.158. Design and development The Shvetsov M-11 was designed under a 1923 competition in the Soviet Union for a new engine to power trainer aircraft. It is a single-row five-cylinder air-cooled radial piston engine with aluminum cylinder heads. Like the American Kinner B-5 5-cylinder radial of similar size, the M-11 had individual camshafts for each cylinder, operating the pushrods, rather than a single central cam ring. The initial versions of the M-11 suffered from a short service life of only 50 hours. The basic M-11 engine had a power output of 100 hp (73 kW), the newer M-11D variant was higher at 125 hp (92 kW). VEF I-17
VEF I-17 was a Latvian trainer aircraft (intended also as a Fighter aircraft, fighter) designed in 1939 by Kārlis Irbītis. The I-17 was test flown in early 1940 and almost immediately accepted by Latvian Air Force. It was produced by the VEF factory in Riga. Design and development In 1939 Latvia ordered 39 Hawker Hurricane fighters from United Kingdom thus there was a need for monoplane pilots in Latvia. For this purpose Kārlis Irbītis designed the VEF I-17 among other trainer aircraft. Due to the start of Second World War in September 1939, the British Hawker Hurricanes never arrived in Latvia and this was an inducement for the Latvian Air force to encourage Latvian aircraft development instead. The VEF I-15 was a Latvian advanced trainer aircraft of the 1930s. VEF I-14
The VEF I-14 was a Latvian Air Force trainer aircraft prototype, built by VEF. Design and development Kārlis Irbītis began work on the I-14 in 1936 in response to an order placed by the Latvian Air Force for a new trainer aircraft. VEF I-11
The VEF I-11 (also called the Irbītis I-11) was a Latvian light aircraft built by VEF. Design and development The I-11 was designed by Kārlis Irbītis in 1936. It was a low-wing monoplane with a two-seat tandem cockpit and fixed conventional landing gear. On the basis of the I-11, Irbītis designed the training fighter I-12.
