Kwame Arhin
Prof. Kwame Arhin, also known as Nana Arhin Brempong, was a historian and politician in Ghana. Arhin built his academic career at the University of Ghana, where he was an editor of the ''Legon Observer'' and had a long-standing association with the Institute of African Studies (IAS), having first been appointed Research Fellow there in October 1963. In October 1988 Arhin, who by then had served as acting Director of the Institute of African Studies for a year, was officially appointed successor to Kwesi A. Dickson as Director of the institute. A historian is a person who studies and writes about the past and is regarded as an authority on it. The University of Ghana is a public university located in Accra, Ghana. It the oldest and largest of the thirteen Ghanaian national public universities. The university was founded in 1948 as the University College of the Gold Coast in the British colony of the Gold Coast. The ''Legon Observer'', the journal of the Legon Society for National Affairs (LSNA), was established in July 1966 as a fortnightly publication.Daniel Miles McFarland, ''Historical Dictionary of Ghana'', Scarecrow Press, 1995, p. 116. With a base in the political science faculty of the University of Ghana at Legon, it established itself as an important critical voice during the military rule of the National Liberation Council. The Institute of African Studies on the Anne Jiagee road on campus of the University of Ghana at Legon is an interdisciplinary research institute in the humanities and social sciences. It was established by President Kwame Nkrumah in 1962 to encourage African studies. Thomas Lionel Hodgkin served as the first Director, from 1962 to 1965. Kwesi Dickson
Kwesi Abotsia Dickson (7 July 1929 – 28 October 2005) was a Ghanaian Christian theologian. He was the seventh President of the Methodist Church Ghana and a professor at the University of Ghana, Legon. Early life and education Kwesi Dickson was born at Saltpond in the Central Region of Ghana. He was educated at the Mfantsipim School at Cape Coast. He completed his basic ministerial training at the Trinity Theological Seminary (then Trinity College in Kumasi) in 1951. He then attended the University of Ghana, then the University College of the Gold Coast. Next he went to the United Kingdom where his postgraduate education was at Mansfield College, Oxford at Oxford University. George Hagan (politician)
Professor George Panyin Hagan (born 1938), is a prominent academic and politician in Ghana. Early life and education George Hagan was born in Accra in 1938. He had his basic education in Accra, Koforidua, Sekondi and Kumasi because his parents, civil servants, were being transferred. His secondary education was at St Thomas Aquinas Secondary School in Cantonments, a suburb of Accra and sixth form (college) at St. Augustine's College at Cape Coast. He proceeded to the University of Ghana, Legon, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in Philosophy and later a Master of Arts degree in Philosophy as well. The Council of State in Ghana is a small body of prominent citizens, analogous to the Council of Elders in the traditional political system, which advises the President on national issues. The Council of State was established by Articles 89 to 92 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana: "There shall be a Council of State to counsel the President in the performance of his functions." Membership The Council of State should include a former Chief Justice of Ghana, a former Chief of the Defence Staff and a former Inspector General of Police and the President of the National House of Chiefs.
